Direct Support Professional / Certified Nursing Assistant needed for small, not-for profit, agency in Mechanicsville. DSP provides center based activities to support participants. Work Schedule will vary; between the hours of 8:00am - 5:45pm 3-4 days per week (Monday-Friday.) Essential skills required: initiative, compassion, professional rapport, physical stamina (this is not a sit down job) experience supporting older adults and/or persons with intellectual disabilities.

Requirements:

1) High school diploma or equivalent;

2) provide Proof of Eligibility to Hire;

3) pass fingerprint background check and VDSS Central Registry check;

4) provide proof of negative TB screening.

5) consent to pre-employment and random drug testing.

6) must be physically able to: respond to behavioral and medical emergencies perform sanctioned behavioral management strategies, Physical duties include assisting participants in wheelchairs, some lifting, and assistance with personal care/hygiene tasks.

7) consent to use of reliable, personal vehicle to use for community outings. (Travel reimbursement is provided each pay period.) Vehicle must be in good condition with air conditioning and heat that can accommodate a transport wheelchair or walker as needed,

8) provide proof of CPR/FA certification

9) preferred: provide proof of Med Tech certification

10) preferred: provide proof of Certified Nursing or Personal Care Assistant certification

preferred: provide proof of TOVA certification

Knowledge of: characteristics of intellectual disabilities; autism, aging, epilepsy, cerebral palsy; first aid, CPR, medication management, and emergency procedures; communication techniques with verbal or non-verbal persons; personal hygiene care including providing physical assistance; procedures for preventing, diffusing, and managing aggression; wheelchair transfers and transferring techniques.

Skills in: recognizing and responding to emergencies; written, verbal, and non-verbal communication; accurately describing and recording data and observations; universal precautions; physically assisting adults with personal care needs (toileting, mobility, feeding, menses care); provide group instruction and supervision in center-based and community settings.

Abilities to: make sound and safe decisions regarding behavior management, emergencies, and health needs; perform work assignments with little or no supervision; analyze needs of non-verbal participants and respond appropriately; maintain confidentiality; communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; physically assist including lifting and transfers (wheelchairs, etc.); establish effective working relationships.
