Job Summary

Church Hill Academy is a faith-based, nonprofit high school for 9-12th grade students living in the East End of Richmond. Our Counselor will work with the Head of School, students and staff to achieve our mission statement, particularly overseeing an individualized, need-based, holistic education and leading student preparation for college, the workplace, and/or as community leaders. Finally, he/she is expected to fully support Church Hill Academys mission and purposes, as well as CHATs core purpose and vision.

Primary Responsibilities

Leads and maintains school-wide academic schedule and procedures.

Works day-to-day directly with CHAs Planning Team (Head of School, School Operations Coordinator, Administrative Coordinator, and Health and Wellness Coordinator) regarding student concerns.

Oversees College & Career Advisor.

Provides both individual and group counseling to students as needed; maintains confidentiality.

Provides crisis intervention and management.

Works directly with Elk Hill Farms staff (Outpatient Therapists and Therapeutic Day Treatment Counselors).

Maintains Student Learning Plans and arranges for classroom accommodations.

Provides staff training on various mental health, trauma informed topics.

Follows the CHAT Employee Manual and adhere to CHAT mission and values.

Abides by and holds students accountable to the CHA Family Handbook.

Attends a weekly CHA Staff Meeting when possible, every Tuesday from 3:15-4:15 p.m.

Serves as a team member of CHAT.

Specific Responsibilities

Academic Leadership

In conjunction with the Head of School and School Operations Coordinator, leads the day-to-day operation of the schools academic schedule, including:

Prepares and maintains the master class schedule,

Assigns teachers and students to classes,

Contributes to the comprehensive school calendar,

Oversees academic advising programs,

Monitors student academic progress (e.g.progress reports and report cards),

Organizes staff to address student academic emergencies and assigns tutoring.

Maintains confidentiality of student records and provides staff with procedures for sharing such information as needed.

Coordinates all standardized testing for students with assistance from College & Career Advisor, including: Schedules test dates (NWEA, PSAT, SAT and ACT), registering students, administering tests, and providing exam preparation resources.

Monitors individual student progress toward a Standard or Advanced Studies Diploma.

Assists in the annual school admissions process by testing, interviewing, and evaluating of new student applicants.

Student Counseling

Organizes and supervises procedures for identifying and addressing the needs of students including: health-related concerns, physical, emotional, mental and spiritual needs.

Serves as the official liaison between Elk Hill and Church Hill Academy staff.

Provide referrals for students in need of additional counseling services including: Outpatient Counseling & Therapeutic Day Treatment

Intervenes between CHA teachers and Elk Hill Staff when need arises.

Counsels CHA students, individual and group sessions, in areas as needed.

Works with CHAs Head of School to address student behavior issues and concerns.

Student Accommodations Coordination

Arranges annual meetings with parents of students who currently receive accommodations.

Updates each Student Learning Plan (SLP) in the first semester of the school year.

Reviews the SLP in the second semester and make changes as needed.

Serves as the contact for parents regarding SLP and Accommodations.

Initiates regular communication with students families to discuss SLP progress and/or changes.

Communicates student learning needs and accommodations effectively and often to all school personnel, in advocacy for students.

Originates Student Learning Plans within the first quarter of school for all referred students.

Inputs and updates accommodations for students with accommodations taking the NWEA, SAT, ACT.

Professional Development

Represents and/or participates in relevant local, state and national conferences and workshops.

Support Church Hill Academy and Church Hill Activities and Tutoring (CHAT)

Offers advice, as requested, to CHAT staff.

Provides leadership to CHAT staff regarding child protection policies and procedures.

Serve as requested by the Head of School

Minimum Qualifications

A high school diploma or the equivalent

A bachelors or masters degree in School Counseling, Social Work, or Counseling from an accredited college or university

Counseling and administrative experience in trauma informed practices

An intentional and practiced commitment to serving and engaging the community in Richmonds East End

Excellent communication skills, written and oral

Personal confession of faith in Jesus Christ and commitment to the vision and mission of CHAT.
