LAW Advocates Mission: Provide free civil legal assistance to low-income Whatcom County residents.
Overview: After nearly a decade of service, LAW Advocates contract attorney is retiring. LAW Advocates provides self-help legal advice and help in completing forms for parenting plans and divorces to low-income survivors of domestic violence who have children. These clients are referred by Domestic Violence & Sexual Assault Services. We are seeking a contract attorney to continue providing self-help legal assistance and to help evaluate and consider enhancing LAW Advocates family law services.
Responsible to: Michael Heatherly, Executive Director
Duties:
Legal Advice & Assistance:
Provide counsel and assistance, work with clients to complete pro se pleadings, and make appropriate referrals
In general, the attorney will NOT represent individual clients in court
Collaborate with LAW Advocates staff to complete client intakes and screen for eligibility
Program Development:
Work with Executive Director and Programs Manager to develop clinic procedures and policies
Identify methods to improve outreach to the target community
Develop educational materials for clients and community members
Supervision & Volunteer Management:
Train and supervise law school interns/externs and Rule 9 interns
Train and supervise legal assistant volunteers
Help recruit and coordinate volunteer family law attorneys
Write volunteer position descriptions for volunteer family law attorneys
Anticipated Terms of Contract:
23 hours service provided per month
Payment of $1,550 per month
The anticipated start date is April 1, 2019.
The contract is subject to termination if funding is terminated or cannot be secured.
Malpractice insurance will be provided by LAW Advocates.
Qualifications:
Member in Good Standing of the Washington State Bar
Expertise in family law, particularly with regard to child custody, including knowledge of the statutes pertaining to domestic violence, orders of protection, and domestic violence restraining orders, as well court procedures pertaining to obtaining temporary and permanent orders
Commitment to the Mission of LAW Advocates
Experience with and commitment to working with individuals who are low income and with victims and survivors of domestic violence is preferred
Fluency in Spanish, Russian, ASL, or another language in addition to English preferred, but not required
