Salary: $48,000 to $52,000 Max DOE
The salary placement upon hire will be based on the selected candidate's education and relevant work experience as outlined in the job announcement and the established salary schedule for the classification of position to be filled.
Note: This position is for 12 months initially and is renewable depending on funding availability and performance.
SCOPE OF WORK
Northwest Indian College invites applicants for a full-time postdoctoral research position on the Lummi main campus at the Salish Sea Research Center (SSRC). The SSRC is a 4,200 sq. ft. research center with a variety of equipment and instruments, including a genetic laboratory and two research vessels. The SSRC works with our tribal partners to focus on community-identified research and increase the presence and influence of Native American leadership in the area of marine sciences. Solutions to environmental degradation require attention to both science and culture. Specifically, the SSRC is charged with increasing the number of Native Americans with science backgrounds in leadership roles that serve their communities. The SSRC provides a facility for world-class research and its mission complements and enhances the efforts of research at Northwest Indian College.
The Salish Sea Research Center seeks an energetic individual to help drive our research forward. We work on marine issues related to the Salish Sea that affect the Indigenous communities in the area. The Salish Sea has a history of harmful algae events, and the SSRC monitors for harmful algae and biotoxins through microscopy and chemical analyses. The successful candidate will work on a community-identified project to design TaqMan probes for qPCR analysis of harmful algae taxa. The overall aim of the grant is to develop probes for harmful algae monitoring and identification while working with our tribal partners to monitor shellfish harvesting locations.
Depending on skillset and interest, the Postdoc will have the opportunity to participate in fieldwork, lab work, and biospecimen receiving, shipping, and handling. The successful candidate will receive training in research collaboration, presentation and publication of results, and outreach and mentoring.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Perform molecular biology protocols governed by Standard Operating Procedures
Extraction of nucleic acids from environmental samples
Design appropriate TaqMan probes for quantification of harmful algae species
Maintenance of tissue biobanks, biospecimen handling, and logistics
Write and edit SOP's as required
Routine maintenance of laboratory equipment
Use typical software including Excel, Word, and OneNote
Proficiency with bioinformatics pipelines and statistical programs such as R
Work in multidisciplinary teams
Mentor undergraduate student interns on research projects
Any other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS to perform the position successfully:
Minimum Qualifications:
PhD in molecular biology or related area
Confident, innovative, problem solver
Experience with qPCR and design of molecular probes
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with Nanopore Technology (MinION)
Proficiency with Python
Experience with molecular protocols involving phytoplankton
Experience with tribal communities
Experience with supervising and facilitating tribal and/or minority students research projects
Experience implementing research projects
Work Environment:
The work environment for this position is primarily within the laboratory, although some outdoor field sampling may be required. Outdoor work could involve exposure to moderate levels of heat, cold, humidity, and/or rain. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
