Job Title:ÂConstruction SuperintendentÂ

Full-time:ÂÂÂÂÂ 40 Hours Per WeekÂ

General Responsibilities:

In accordance with Habitat for Humanity in Whatcom Countys construction standards and policies, supervises overall construction activity and provides leadership to subordinate staff, volunteers, andÂÂsub-contractors. Workweeks may include Saturdays supervising the construction site, attending weekly staff meeting at the Habitat office, coordinating the activities of the Construction Committee, training crew leaders and key volunteers, and preparing/planning for construction activities.Â

Typical Work Activities:

Under the direction of the Executive Director and in consultation with the Construction Committee, schedules and plans the work flowÂfor the Telegraph Townhome project. In addition, plans the work day and supervises the work of all volunteers;

Coordinates a team of project consultants such as architects, civil engineers, structural engineers, wetland biologists, attorneys and others working on technical aspects of project implementation.

Works closely with the Office Manager and Resource Development Director to ensure materials and service needs are provided in a timely manner to the job sites;

Treats partner families (house recipients) with respect and dignity. Strives to make their construction experience meaningful. Delivers Partner Family Sweat Equity Hours Tracking Record to office by Tuesday of every week;

Understands elements that contribute to successful volunteering and helps ensure that volunteers have a consistently good experience thus motivating them to return;

Anticipates problems and issues typical of the Habitat ministry and personally acts on same if necessary to help ensure schedules are met, work plans are completed, and volunteers are productively engaged;

Evaluates and implements good safety practices and constantly stresses same with crew leaders and volunteers;

Ensures that communications to volunteers are accurate and timely;

Identifies volunteer jobs/needs not currently filled and communicates needs to the Volunteer Coordinator;

Trains all volunteers utilizing others on his/her team;

Suggests potential advantageous building practices and material cost saving opportunities to construction committee chairperson as identified. Complies with local building codes and Habitats Construction Standards, including preventing creeping affluence;

Supervises all site preparation and layout;

Supervises all warranty complaints and repairs;

Meets long and short-term goals established with the Executive Director, including establishing and managing a construction budget for the project;

Obtains permission from the Executive Director to expend construction funds not itemized in the construction budget or exceeds the amount budgeted for any item;

Promptly submits vendor invoices, in-kind gift tracking sheets, incident reports, mileage logs, time sheets and other paperwork as required.

Becomes certified as a Competent Person in construction safety standards.

Physical Demands:

The incumbent will be required to lift up to 60 lbs., unassisted, on a regular basis, with frequent bending, squatting, lifting and repetitive motion. The position will occasionally be exposed to the extremes of the outside environment (e.g., heat, cold, wind, rain, snow, etc.)

Experience:

Â

Considerable knowledge of the construction/contracting business, with construction and project management experience, including the management of multiple, simultaneous projects.Â

Proven administrative and management skills including scheduling, contract development and management, budgeting and reporting.

Strong oral and written communication skills, including the ability to communicate clearly with both technical and non-technical people.

Solid computer and information technology skills including proficiency with word processing, spreadsheet, and other software for managing, presenting, and disseminating information to diverse audiences.

Ability to work in a rapid paced, time sensitive, and highly strategic work environment

Experience working both independently and on interdisciplinary teams.

Willingness to travel within the region is required. Must have a valid drivers license and reliable vehicle.

Experience with volunteers and team building is a real plus.Â

Good listening skills and the ability to be a patient teacher and supervisor.Â

Must be willing to adopt a servant-leadership approach to Habitats ministry and be prepared to share that house building is only a part of the larger goal of elevating families out of poverty forever.
