Founded in 1990, North Olympic Land Trust is a nonprofit conserving the natural areas and working lands that define and sustain the communities of the North Olympic Peninsula. The Land Trust is dedicated to the conservation of open spaces, local food, local resources, healthy watersheds and recreational opportunities. We strive to conserve the farms, fish and forests that improve our communitys quality of life.

Based in Port Angeles, Washington, the Community Engagement Specialist is a permanent half-time non-exempt position that oversees the planning and implementation of the Land Trusts community engagement and communications activities.

The Community Engagement Specialist reports to the Executive Director. The position requires a highly organized, self-motivated, and detail-oriented individual eager to contribute and excel in a collaborative work environment.

This position has two overarching responsibilities:

1. Promote and foster our communitys land ethic and pride of place, and

2. Engage community members in the story of local land conservation, highlighting their role in creating a positive future for our social and natural environments.

Specifically, the position is accountable for:

Honing the overarching themes and messages of Land Trust communications,

Creating Land Trust communication materials, including the webpage, social media presence, media relations, monthly digital newsletter, printed newsletter/update letters, and items for specific campaigns and events,

Maintaining and building the organizations brand,

Building partnerships with targeted local community groups and leaders,

Creating forums and opportunities for community members to engage with and help define local conservation efforts for our evolving future,

Assessing and planning community engagement current and potential events/ activities that connect local citizens with this place

Fostering and systematizing the volunteer program,

Leading community programs and events such as Clallam County Farm Tour, the Land Trust Family Picnic, Annual Meeting,

Designing interpretative signage at key conservation sites that share the story of land conservations impact on the communitys economic development, ecological resilience and general quality of life, and

Working with the Development Associate to coordinate mass mailings and email distribution of newsletters, gift solicitations, invitations, and announcements.

Qualifications

Passion for the mission of North Olympic Land Trust,

Over 2 years of experience, with a proven track record in building relationships between the mission of a nonprofit organization and the communities it serves,

Bachelors degree in a related field,

Ability to craft and tell the story of local land conservation in a manner that engages the community with this amazing landscape,

Stellar written, visual and oral communication skills,

Strong knowledge and practice in community needs assessment, communications strategy, social media, website administration, traditional media, and event planning,

Ability to effectively work independently and in close collaboration with Land Trust staff and volunteers,

Desire and demonstrated ability to identify and address personal knowledge gaps; to learn on the job; and to cultivate sources of knowledge, expertise, and skill,

Background in nonprofit fund development preferable,

Familiarity with Salesforce or other CRM databases, and

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with agencies, public officials, other employees, special interest groups and the general public.

The working environment of the Community Engagement Specialist is primarily in a professional office setting. However, the position is expected to travel to off-site locations in order to attend meetings and other job-related activities. The office duties are often sedentary and require the ability to use a keyboard, complete written documents, operate general office equipment, and be able to lift 15-20 lbs.
