As a Firmware Engineer on the Facebook FRL hardware team, you will design, build and test firmware to create transformative experiences for users of Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality products. Firmware for FRL systems spans multiple target classes, requiring collaboration across multiple engineering disciplines (electrical, mechanical, optical, firmware and software) and directly impacting user immersion. You will become part of a team exploring new concepts through analytical modeling and fast iterative prototyping. We value people who work well in teams, can brainstorm ideas, are able to drive a concept into a prototype and can envision how that prototype could transition into a high-volume consumer product. We are seeking a Firmware Engineer who has experience in consumer electronics, knowledge of embedded systems and a passion for working on new hardware. This position has a 16-week duration. All candidates are expected to commit to a consecutive 16 week timeframe for successful completion of the program. At the end of the term, those participants who have demonstrated their ability to succeed and make an impact at Facebook will be considered for a full-time position.   • Analyze, design, develop, and debug firmware for a wide variety of AR and VR consumer devices, including sensing and imaging systems, haptic devices, and audio prototypes
  • Support various phases of firmware development including architecture, implementation, simulation, debug and bring up
  • Understand and implement power-management, boot loaders, scheduling, and RTOS
  • Collaborate in a team environment across multiple product focused, research, and engineering disciplines to deliver firmware solutions
  • Understand and drive implementation of FW development good practices across teams and projects

  • BS in Computer Science or Electrical Engineering or equivalent experience
  • 3+ years of experience in embedded firmware design
  • Experience with software design and programming in C/C for development, debugging, testing and performance analysis
  • Experience with embedded microcontrollers e.g., ARM Cortex M0/M3/M4, interrupt priorities and configuring peripherals
  • Experience with instrumentation like oscilloscopes and/or logic/protocol analyzers for debugging embedded systems at HW level
  • Experience with device documentation and translating that information into software solutions
  • Experience with cross multi-disciplinary boundaries to drive system solutions
  • Experience with working independently and managing priorities

  • Experience analyzing hardware and power consumption
  • Experience with hardware, clock-level issues, bridges, delays, interrupts, clock gating, polling etc.
  • Experience with peripherals such as USB, SPI, MIPI CSI/DSI, I2C, UART, GPIO etc.
  • Experience with protocol implementations such as USB device classes (UVC, UAC, HID)
  • Experience with embedded DSP and CPU architectures
  • Experience producing production quality, fail-safe firmware for low-power real-time system control
  • Experience with EDA design tools and instruction set simulators
  • Experience with FPGA and vendor specific hardware evaluation boards
  • Experience with methods of designing experiments to diagnose embedded hardware and firmware problems
  • Experience in real-time processing for computer vision and user interaction tasks, high-compute/throughput systems and using simulation and modeling technique to estimate performance and power
