Job Description

KIPP DC is looking for a College & Career Senior Seminar Teacher/Instructor to support 12th-grade students attending KIPP DC College Preparatory, an 800-student comprehensive high school in the District of Columbia. The ideal teacher will have a wealth of knowledge around career readiness and helping students examine careers that both require a college education and a certifying program. The instructor will also have a vast amount of knowledge about the college application process from application building to financial aid.

This instructor should be ready to produce dynamic lessons that help build practical skills that students will need in their first years of college and in the world of work. As the Senior Seminar course has to remain relevant given shifts in the post-secondary landscape, the teacher should also be ready to welcome other experts and teams into their classroom space for first-hand student exposure and synthesis of the courses very diverse and developing curriculum.

This is an exempt position and reports to the principal.

Key Requirements and Responsibilities:

  • Teach eight sections of Senior Seminar (4 sections/day) which will consist of structured and innovative lessons, clear daily expectations, graded assignments that allow students for differentiated learning styles to both succeed and excel, and energy and passion that will lead to invested students and strong classroom management.
  • Provide differentiated lessons that speak to individual student’s career goals and professional passions while developing 21st-century communication skills that will be vital as seniors complete high school and head to their post-secondary pursuits.
  • Work closely with the College & Career Counseling Team to create a scope and sequence for Senior Seminar course that will support students in the sequential nature of the college admission and certification process while developing important academic, technological, critical thinking, and professional skills that will help students well beyond their time in high school
  • The instructor will not have a college and career counseling caseload, but will provide instruction that supports these efforts and will backward map with the college and career team and school leadership teams to help ensure progress toward goals set by KIPP DC and encouraged by KIPP Foundation’s KTC team.
  • Maintain regular communication with students and families about course expectations, assignments, and student performance.
  • Grade student assignments and comply with KIPP DC grading norms
  • Partner with social workers and special education teachers to support students with special needs
  • Work closely with the College & Career Counseling Team and KIPP Through College & Career Team to help students progress towards high school graduation and through their post-secondary plans through dynamic instruction, proactive advising, tailored interventions, and targeted programming.
  • This instructor will primarily serve on the College & Career Counseling Team but will also support the 12th-grade team.
  • This instructor should also have a growing number of network contacts in the public and private sector that could help build partnerships around our post-secondary goals and instruction.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree (Required)
  • Commitment to working with students from communities with limited access to quality educational opportunities (Required)
  • At least two years of teaching experience in a public school or education degree with student teaching experience (Strongly Preferred)
  • Experience teaching high school students or post-secondary students (Preferred)
  • Experience in college placement, college admissions, or postsecondary career programs (Preferred)
  • Experience supporting students with special needs (Preferred)
  • Strong cultural competency skills, including ability to communicate and work effectively and cultivate relationships with a diverse set of stakeholders
  • Passion for education reform and the belief that every child can succeed
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent relationship-building skills
  • Ability to create a curriculum and daily lesson plans
  • Expertise in the career-readiness and a demonstrated understanding of the job market for the DC Metropolitan area
  • A growth mindset and a commitment to building diverse, equitable, and inclusive spaces
  • Good knowledge of technology systems used in college counseling and career readiness spaces (ie Naviance, YouScience, CollegeBoard portal, scholarship portals, etc.)
