The Benefits Engineering team at Northwestern Mutual is responsible for improving and building systems that are focused on efficiently managing our claims processes and in doing that delivering a distinctive client experience.

As a Senior Software engineer on the Benefits Engineering team, you will be helping to drive our digital transformation and platform modernization efforts while managing the operational expectations of our existing platform. In doing that you will be helping to lead the architecture and direction of the benefits platform working with other engineers on the team, vendor consultants and other internal technical areas to design and deliver a modern claims management ecosystem.

The ideal candidate will be a full stack engineer with experience across UI design and development, good understanding and experience with microservices architecture along with back end skills with exposure to building highly performant and resilient applications on the cloud. The candidate must possess a focused, get-things-done demeanor and be effective at working with little supervision and managing competing priorities.

Requirements:
  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience with 6-9 years professional experience required
  • 6 - 7 years proven experience working with modern engineering tools, languages and practices
  • Financial Services experience in delivering technology solutions across Life/Annuity/DI/LTC Insurance Products is preferred
  • Shown critical thinking, ownership approach and continuous learning
  • Experience developing solutions using agile methods
  • Sophisticated skillset in one or more technologies.
  • Full Stack Engineer with well-rounded skills across front end and server-side programming including DevOps automation and experience with Cloud infrastructure, preferably AWS.

Technologies/Skills:
  • Core Programming Skills - Java / Springboot / Springbatch, React / Redux, NodeJS, Javascript
  • DevOps and Build Automation - GitLab CI / Jenkins, Maven, Gradle, Terraform
  • Cloud - AWS (S3, Lambda, RDS, EC2, KMS, IAM)

Concepts:
  • Object oriented design patterns, Microservices Architecture, Event Driven Frameworks and Service Oriented Architecture
  • Experience with API Management Frameworks
  • Familiarity with both Batch and Real-time application patterns
  • Familiarity with Security Patterns/Frameworks like Secure SDLC, TLS and Secrets Management
  • Familiarity with Containers and Container Management (Kubernetes)
  • Familiarity with Business Rules Management and Document Management systems
