    The National Historic Trails Interpretive Center shares the significant role of the area’s historic trails through time, and seeks to promote understanding of America’s Native cultures and historic westward expansion.

    Responsibilities

    This position is located at the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) National Historic Trails Interpretive Center (NHTIC) in Casper, Wyoming. The NHTIC is an 11-acre intensively utilized recreation and interpretive visitor facility with a wide diversity of natural, cultural, and human values.

    The incumbent serves as a Maintenance Worker under the direction of the NHTIC Director. This position will perform and coordinate facility and grounds maintenance, Contracting Officer Representative (COR) for Janitorial Contract and some construction and electrical, plumbing, painting, and carpentry work at the NHTIC. The position is responsible for the efficient and effective functioning and preventive maintenance of building systems that include but are not limited to the Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning system (HVAC), electrical, lighting, emergency power supply, mechanical, plumbing, fire suppression, and security systems. The incumbent schedules, performs, and documents preventive maintenance on all building systems; determines the need for specialized and recurring maintenance services; arranges for specialized work to be performed by contractors; and serves as the point of contact and project coordinator with local vendors and contractors.

    Physical Demands: The work requires standing on hard surfaces for extended periods, often while operating power equipment and tools. Work involves bending, stooping, kneeling, and working in uncomfortable positions. Use of heavy powered cleaning equipment is required, but not on a continual basis. Strenuous physical exertion is sometimes required when handling heavy or bulky items weighing more than 50 pounds, moving and setting ladders or scaffolding, and conducting snow removal and grounds maintenance.

    Work Environment: Most work is performed indoors in temperature controlled and well ventilated areas. When working outside the incumbent may be subject to cuts, burns, muscle strains, electrical shock, and abrasions while repairing and handling equipment. The incumbent may work in confined areas such as crawl spaces that are dusty and dirty or at extreme heights on ladders and scissor lifts. The incumbent can be subjected to vibration from heavy cleaning equipment, and skin irritations from cleaning solutions. Care is required to avoid injuries when working on ladders, scaffolds or lifts, and when using heavy powered equipment. Protective devices such as ear plugs, safety glasses, respirators, and gloves are required.

    Qualifications

    There is no specific length of training or experience required. However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision. Your resume must demonstrate you have performed a variety of tasks involved in the upkeep of buildings, grounds, structures, fixtures and utilities with limited or no supervision; and that you are skilled in at least one of the following trades: carpentry/woodworking techniques and basic shop mathematics. You must be able to perform the duties of the position as described in the vacancy.
