GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

The Wyoming Game and Fish Department is seeking a Communications and Outreach Supervisor in Cheyenne, WY. This position supervises multiple disciplines within the statewide communications and outreach team for the Department. The position will supervise, train, evaluate, coordinate, and direct teams of permanent personnel in the planning, administration, management, coordination, and budgeting of comprehensive statewide information and education programs. Oversee staff and programs that support the Wyoming Game and Fish Department's mission through intra-agency coordination, customer service, conservation education, hunter education, hunter/angler recruitment, disseminate information through TV and radio media and other social media.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function which may be performed at the job level.
  • Supervise information and education employees (TV; radio; emails; social media; conservation education; hunter education; hunter/angler recruitment).

  • Ensure close intra-agency coordination and teamwork.

  • Oversee development of priorities; implement work plans; direct and delegate work; review work products; and conduct performance appraisals.

  • Oversee the development and management of budgets.

  • Intra-agency coordination and teamwork to accomplish the agency's highest information and education priorities.

  • Work closely with the communications director, public information officer, division administrators, and other employees (e.g., regional information & education employees - Wildlife Division) to accomplish agency priorities.

  • Use conservation education, hunter education, hunter/angler recruitment, inter-and intra-agency coordination, and teamwork to accomplish the agency's priorities.

  • Use various communication tools (social media, news media tools - TV, and radio) to accomplish the agency's priorities strategically.

  • Work closely with the division administrators, regional personnel, volunteers, conservation organizations, etc., to accomplish agency priorities.

Qualifications

PREFERENCES/AGENCY REQUIREMENTS:

Preference may be given to those with a Bachelor's Degree plus 1-3 years of progressive work experience or 4-7 years of progressive work experience in supervisor roles.

Preference may be given to those with supervisory or program management experience.

Preference may be given to those with Strategic communications experience.

Preference may be given to those with outreach program development experience.

Must have a valid driver's license.

KNOWLEDGE:
  • Skill in employee supervision, including directing and overseeing work, resolving conflict, conducting performance evaluations, and completing disciplinary actions; internal communications.

  • Ability to write and edit news and publication copy for print and broadcast mediums.

  • Understanding of social media and email strategy.

  • Knowledge of and practical application of principles and current trends in conservation education strategies, hunter education strategies, and best hunting/angler recruitment practices.

  • Ability to break down technical information into messages suitable for the general public.

  • Ability to manage, lead and supervise multiple priorities, projects and programs.

  • Ability to prioritize and manage workloads.

  • Ability to communicate and work effectively with other work units, divisions, and organizations.

  • Skill in developing and implementing comprehensive media plans.

  • Work with minimal supervision, have good written and oral communication skills, be multi-task oriented, have organizational skills, and coordinate new projects.

  • Strong interpersonal skills to build positive working relationships within the agency, with stakeholder groups, businesses, and communicate effectively with various people.

  • Working knowledge of wildlife management, outdoor recreation, and conservation, including hunting, fishing, and trapping.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:

Bachelor's Degree (typically in Business Management)

Experience:

1-3 years of progressive work experience (typically in Business Management) with acquired knowledge at the level of a Business Office Supervisor I

OR

Education & Experience Substitution:

4-7 years of progressive work experience (typically in Business Management) with acquired knowledge at the level of a Business Office Supervisor I

PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Statewide travel will be required.
