The South Zone of the Shoshone National Forest is seeking one intern for a 12-week summer position as a Wilderness Ranger to work in the extraordinary Washakie, Fitzpatrick, and Popo Agie Wilderness areas.

WILDERNESS RANGER DUTIES INCLUDE:

  • Campsite inventory, condition monitoring, and data collection on the Survey123 field program
  • Campsite cleanup, naturalization, revegetation, and restoration
  • Carrying out trash from wilderness
  • Visitor use monitoring and data collection using the Survey123 field program
  • Professionally conducting visitor contacts, checking for compliance, and providing information/education on Forest regulations
  • Assist in conducting Outfitter/Guide inspections
  • Wilderness sign and trailhead kiosk maintenance
  • Help with trail logout and minor trail maintenance
  • May assist with Special Uses front-country Lands inspections

REQUIRED SKILLS:

  • Physical fitness is required for hiking on- and off-trail over rough (rocky, snowy, steep) mountainous terrain at high elevations (commonly 9,000-12,000 ft.) in various adverse weather conditions.
  • Ability to hike 10 to 20 miles a day carrying 50+ lbs. while also conducting work duties along the route
  • Previous hiking, backpacking, and wilderness camping experience is necessary.
  • Ability to work and live in the backcountry for up to 8 days at a time
  • Professionalism when contacting visitors, including in high-use areas
  • Willingness to accept and manage risks associated with extreme weather events, stream crossings, driving mountainous roads, wildlife, exposure to biting/stinging insects, and other conditions
  • Willingness to work and live in grizzly bear habitat
  • Due to the remote, isolated location of Dubois, WY, it is important that an intern provides their own mode of transportation

INTERN SCHEDULE: START DATE: Monday, May 22nd, 2023 END DATE: Sunday, August 13th, 2023 End of May to Mid-June: Monday-Friday 8:00-4:30. Front-country day trips, weekends off. Mid-June to Mid-August: Tuesday-Tuesday, daily hours vary. Backcountry hitches for 8 days at a time, followed by 6 days off. The successful candidate will serve alongside an experienced US Forest Service Wilderness Ranger on 8-day-long wilderness hitches. The hitches are self-supported (carrying all food, tools, clothing, equipment, PPE on your back) and may include longer days, depending on workload.

Compensation$250/week Living Allowance – $1,100 To/From Travel Allowance, paid once with first paycheck – USFS bunkhouse Housing provided on-site – Eligible for AmeriCorps Education Award of $1,718, received upon successful completion of position and 450 service hours – Eligible for the Public Land Corps (PLC) hiring authority upon successful completion of position (& 640 hrs minimum of service–can be combined with another USFS internship)

The Wind River Ranger District bunkhouse in Dubois is a dormitory-style bunkhouse with 5 double-occupancy rooms, 4 bathrooms, a laundry room, shared living room, and shared double kitchen.
