Job Description

General Description:

Lab Tech conducts standardized physical and chemical tests on coal by performing laboratory duties.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Performs required tests on coal sample(s), ensuring procedure for such test is always followed.
  • Maintains analytical, preparation and sampling equipment as necessary to ensure adequate operation.
  • Documents analysis results, in both written and electronic format.
  • Performs daily QA checks prior to running samples, communicates any issues with management.
  • Performs assigned monthly/quarterly equipment checks and repairs if applicable.

  • Education / Experience: No prior experience necessary, will provide required training. High school diploma or general education degree (GED).

  • Language Skills: Ability to comprehend simple verbal and written instructions. Ability to document test results, either written or electronically. Ability to effectively present information to supervisors, other technicians and auditors.

  • Mathematical Skills: Ability to perform arithmetic in various units of measure using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio and percent. Ability to draw and interpret graphical information.

  • Reasoning Ability: Ability to detect deviations from acceptable criteria. Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out written and oral instructions. Ability to apply critical thinking to standardized situations where company precedent/ legal precedent apply.

  • Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee will be required to stand for long periods of time, walk, sit, climb and lift and/or move objects of various weights.

  • Work Environment: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, pressurized gases, outside weather conditions, risk of electrical shock, vibration and noise exposure.

  • Other information: This is an entry level position in a laboratory that tests coal samples. Full-time position does include medical benefits, 401K and paid vacation. Daily workload will fluctuate from day to day, depending on samples received, with the potential of overtime. Schedule will rotate Days/Nights and days off.
