  • JOB SUMMARY

    • Works under the supervision of the lab manager. Responsible for obtaining a variety of specimens from patients of all ages using a variety of collection techniques. Responsible for performing limited testing, processing send out specimens, maintaining and receiving supplies. Performs quality control, preventative maintenance, trains new employees, takes part in continuing education and maintains positive interpersonal relationships. Types department policies and procedures. Performs other duties as assigned.

  • PRIMARY JOB DUTIES

    • Performs positive patient identification. Labels specimens appropriately and completely.

    • Obtains adequate blood specimens in a timely manner by venous or capillary puncture on patients of all ages without undue stress or injury to the patient while adhering to universal precautions procedures.

    • Transcribes and enters physician’s orders and coordinates result handling.

    • Models excellent customer service as first impression of the department.

    • Functions as primary communication resource for department.

    • Coordinates tests and procedures and provides instruction to patients on specimen collection.

    • Processes specimens for send out to reference laboratory.

    • Performs legal collection of urine and buccal specimens.

    • Performs point of care testing and handles results according to departmental policy.

    • Monitors par levels and orders supplies as needed.

    • Receives supplies and delivers to appropriate departments

    • Maintains a clean and orderly work environment.

    • Trains new employees, participates in department education, review of manuals, and SQM.

    • Maintains positive relationships with internal and external customers.

    • Conducts review of patient’s medical record as needed.

    • Adheres to CCMH policies and procedures.

    • Complies with the hospital’s Corporate Compliance Program including, but not limited to, the Code of Conduct, laws and regulations, and hospital policies and procedures.

    • Must be free from governmental sanctions involving health care and/or financial practices.

    • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • JOB SPECIFICATIONS

    • Education: High School Diploma or GED. Medical Terminology.

    • Licensure: Must obtain PBT certification within 2 years of employment.

    • Certifications required: See Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Certification Policy and Certifications/Education Requirements Policy.

    • Experience: Minimal Phlebotomy training or experience required.

    • Essential Technical/Motor Skills: A high degree of manual and finger dexterity and hand/eye coordination is required, as are vision, hearing and speech sufficient to perform duties.

    • Interpersonal Skills: Must have a good attitude and be able to deal with people in a courteous manner.

    • Essential Physical Requirements: Position requires a full range of body motion, including lifting and carrying supplies on a daily basis. Position requires bending over to obtain specimens. Standing for long periods is sometimes encountered. The ability to move from sitting to standing repeatedly is required. Work area is subject to continual noise and changes in ventilation and the vibration of instruments.

    • Essential Mental Abilities: Must be able to read and comprehend written instructions. Must be able to learn use of new technical devices. Must be able to work without assistance and under stressful conditions.

    • Essential Sensory Requirements: Must have vision and hearing corrected to normal range. Must be able to tolerate use of computer displays.

    • Exposure to Hazards: OSHA CATEGORY I. TASK THAT INVOLVES EXPOSURE TO BLOOD, BODY FLUIDS, OR TISSUES. All procedures or other job-related tasks that involve an inherent potential for mucous membrane or skin contact with blood, body fluids, or tissues, or potential for spills or splashes of them, are Category I Tasks. Use of appropriate protective measures is required for every employee engaged in Category I Tasks.

    • Hours of Work: Overtime, evenings and weekends may be required. Shift work including 8, 10, or 12-hour shifts may be required.

    • Shifts. Some on call time may be required.
