Cadet Team Leader

Description and Functions

This position supervises, monitors, and provides direction to youth during general daily activities at the Wyoming Cowboy ChalleNGe Academy through positive role-modeling.

The Wyoming Cowboy ChalleNGe Academy is located at the National Guard Training base in Guernsey, WY. The volunteer program is for at-risk boys and girls in the age range of 16 to 18 years old who are looking to develop values, life skills, education, and self-discipline necessary to succeed as an adult. Emphasis is on respect, self-control, self-esteem, education, and the development of a healthy lifestyle.

• Monitors and oversees the daily activities of youth in areas such as study time, meals, work details, and physical training.

• Promotes a supportive, corrective, and professional learning environment to enhance emotional, physical, and behavioral development.

• Provides leadership to a unit through disciplinary actions, setting and enforcing standards and guidelines, and ensuring academic support is provided.

• Ensures youth are meeting and participating in the program components.

• Determines and assesses youth progress within the program.

• Responsible for professional verbal and written communication and effective teamwork.

• Assesses behavior and recommends interventions to the counseling and senior staff.

• Participates in the youth disciplinary process.

• Responsible for Drill & Ceremony (D & C), marching Cadets, and teaching/training within established Military Standards.

• Responsible for demonstration and participation in routine daily physical exercise (PT).

• Conduct security checks, barracks, and uniform inspections, and ensure the safety of Cadets.

Qualifications

PREFERENCES/AGENCY REQUIREMENTS:

Preference may be given to those with an Associate's Degree in Sociology or Human Services, plus two years of progressive work experience in youth-based programs or;

Preference may be given to those with 4 years of progressive work experience in youth-based programs or;

Preference may be given to those with at least 2 years of Military service with an honorable discharge.

Required to obtain and maintain a valid Driver's License.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:

Associate's Degree (typically in Social Services)

Experience:

0-1 year of progressive work experience (typically in Youth Services) with acquired knowledge at the level of a Youth Services Security Officer

OR

Education & Experience Substitution:

2-4 years of progressive work experience (typically in Youth Services) with acquired knowledge at the level of a Youth Services Security Officer

Necessary Special Requirements

PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

• Required to work varied shift schedules: days, nights, graveyards, swing, weekends, and holidays.

• This position is considered "Mission Essential".

• Required to actively participate in daily physical exercise with the Cadets.

• Must adhere to military/program dress and appearance standards.

NOTES:

• FLSA: Non-exempt

• Pre-employment background check of work history, Central Registry, NCIC, and NCIC III is required.

• Guernsey is a remote, rural community with a population of approximately 1064. Locally, there are medical clinics, a hardware store, a grocery store, service stations, and restaurants. Wheatland and Torrington are 25 to 35 miles from Guernsey and have multiple restaurants, service stations, fast food, and general shopping. For larger personal shopping there are malls in Cheyenne and Casper, WY and Scottsbluff, NE, all approximately 90 miles from Guernsey.
