Reporting to the Director of Financial Planning & Analysis, the “Mine Controller” is responsible for leading the development and oversight of the functional areas of:

  • operational and equipment accounting, analysis and reporting; and

  • the organization’s budgeting and forecasting.

The focus of the Operational Controller is to maximize the organizations profitability, provide insight and analysis to support operation’s business decisions, drive the organization’s budgeting and forecasting activities and to identify and mitigate financial reporting and fraud risk through a structured internal control management process.

The Operations Controller brings professional qualities to their role and encourages ethical behavior and decision making throughout the organization. The role works closely with the Mine Managers the Corporate Controller and the functional areas of Corporate Accounting, Tax, Treasury, Information Technology, Shared Service Center (payroll, accounts payable, accounts receivable), Estimating, Contracts, Procurement and Materials Management to support the organization’s success in:

  • creating and preserving sustainable shareholder value;

  • delivering on strategic objectives;

  • maintaining stewardship for the organization’s assets;

  • engaging and communicating with the organization and external stakeholders;
  • adhering to all regulatory reporting requirements; and

  • providing effective, transparent and accountable leadership.

Responsibilities

  • Execute overall organization strategy for responsible business areas

    • Develop goals, action plans and key performance indicators for all responsible business areas in support of the organization’s strategic objectives

    • Drive and manage change and innovation within the organization
    • Ensure the continued growth in profitability by maximizing current operating efficiencies, driving effective cost management and realizing the benefits of innovation, business process improvements and IT system optimization

    • Lead the development and management of effective levels of service for all responsible business areas with a focus on enhancing the abilities, capabilities and insights of all stakeholders they support

    • Engage and communicate with business stakeholders and industry / professional peers while actively pursuing continuous learning and personal development that provides opportunities to assimilate knowledge and skills relevant to individual and departmental advancement

  • Provide financial expertise, leadership, guidance and structure to the functions of operational and equipment accounting and reporting

    • Direct the timely, accurate accounting, reporting and management of the operation’s project and equipment financial situation

    • Manage the integration, standardization and automation of financial, operational and equipment reporting needs

    • Lead the definition, evaluation and mitigation strategies for the potential financial reporting and fraud risk for responsible business areas

    • Lead the development, improvement and oversight of operational and equipment accounting processes, policies and effective internal controls, ensuring:

      • compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Standards (GAAP);

      • mitigation of potential financial reporting and fraud risk;

      • stewardship of assets and data; and

      • adherence to local, provincial and federal regulatory requirements

  • Collaborating with project managers to ensure timely recognition and recording of mine performance

  • Provide financial analysis, reporting and support to the Corporate Finance groups (Corporate Reporting, tax, treasury)

  • Provide financial expertise and support to the Director of Financial Planning & Analysis and mine management.
  • Optimize and manage the configuration and use of the organization’s ERP system to ensure relevant, complete and useful internal and external business reporting

  • In conjunction with the Corporate Controller, manage the relationship and support of the organization’s external auditor to ensure an effective and organized audit of the financial statements and internal controls over financial reporting

  • Lead and manage the functional area of budgeting and forecasting

    • Drive the consolidated budget and forecasting process that supports the organization’s strategic objectives with the effective use of capital and the generation of positive free cash flow
    • Develop and manage systematic forecasting solutions that are integrated with JD Edwards and allow for a simple, timely and accurate forecasting process.

    • Work with operations leaders to develop and maintain key financial drivers for the budget & forecast process.

    • Develop and maintain financial models that can be used for ad hoc and “what if” analysis.

    • Manage the preparation of the quarterly and annual Board and bank forecast presentations.

Qualifications

  • Minimum five years progressive finance leadership experience in a medium to large sized public company
  • Experience in job costing and / or equipment accounting preferred

  • Experience in business forecasting, including full financial statement modelling

  • Experience in heavy construction, mining, large equipment preferred
  • Experience using JD Edwards ERP.

  • University degree.

  • Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation required.

  • Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (US GAAP and IFRS)

  • Knowledge of financial reporting regulatory requirements and Sarbanes-Oxley legislation requirements for Internal Controls over Financial Reporting

  • Knowledge of information technology including use of an Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) financial, accounting, reporting and transaction processing system (JD Edwards preferred)

  • Knowledge of strategic planning and ability to lead forecasting, budgeting and financial modelling analysis and evaluation

  • Ability to motivate teams to produce quality, useful reporting and value added services while working effectively to build trust and confidence with all stake holders

  • Excellent professional written and verbal communication, interpersonal and influencing skills.
