    Responsibilities

    The incumbent of this position serves as an Archaeologist in the Lander Field Office. The Archaeologist performs research, field investigations, and integration of results (either their own or those of others) into agency or departmental environmental assessments, impact statements, operational programs, historic preservation compliance reports, and varied types of planning documents, laboratory and other data analysis, library research, interpretation or consultative work, preparation of reports for publication, curatorship and exhibition of collections, or development and implementation of programs and projects which carry out such work. Such work requires a professional knowledge of archaeological principles, theories, concepts, methods, and techniques.

    Physical Demands: Work is a combination of sedentary activities and duties that involve hiking, driving over rough terrain, bending, stooping, reaching, and lifting.

    Work Environment: Work is performed in both office and field settings. Field work may involve exposure to extreme weather, hostile wildlife, chemicals, and physical hazards.

    BASIC REQUIREMENTS: You must have 1 of the following (A-C): A- 1. Education: Degree that included 3 semester hours each in the following course areas: 1) History of archeology 2) Archeology of a major geographical area such as North America or Africa 3) Regional archeology, archeological cultures, or sites in a specific part or portion of a major geographical area to acquire or develop a foundation for regional specialization for professional development 4)Theory and methods of archeology. Methods include, but are not limited to, typology, classification, sampling, cultural evolution, diffusion, dating, and analytical techniques 5) Archeological field school, to provide a basic understanding of theoretical and practical approaches to research design implementation, field preservation techniques, and report preparation by participation in actual field work AND Six semester hours of related course work in: 1)geography, geology, or cultural geography 2) history, historiography, or historical archeology 3) environmental studies 4)scientific writing (nonfiction English composition) and/or 5) surveying AND Archeological field school. OR A- 2. Related Curriculum Degree in anthropology (with emphasis on ethnology, physical anthropology, or scientific linguistics), history, American studies, or a related discipline may be accepted as satisfying in full the educational requirements, provided the curriculum supplied academic course work sufficiently similar to the requirements in A-1 (including archeological field school). OR B . Combination of Education and Experience: College-level education or training that provided knowledge equivalent to that described in A above, plus appropriate technical experience or additional education. OR C. Experience: Four years of archeological work experience that demonstrated a thorough knowledge of the fundamental principles and theories of professional archeology. The work experience must have included archeology field experience, which may include that gained in an archeological field school. Field experience should have included a combination of professional experience in archeological survey, excavation, laboratory analysis, and preparation of written materials.

    Qualifications

    In order to be rated as qualified for this position, we must be able to determine that you meet the specialized experience requirement - please be sure to include this information in your resume. To be creditable, this experience must have been equivalent in difficulty and complexity to the next lower grade (GS-07 for the GS-09 and GS-09 for the GS-11) of the position to be filled.

    To qualify at the GS-09 level you must meet the basic requirement AND have: 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-07 level in the Federal Service OR 2 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree in Archeology OR and equivalent combination of education and experience. Specialized experience for the GS-09 is defined as: experience working as an archeological staff member, working as a cultural resource expert, working on an archeological dig, and writing archaeological reports, using GIS systems to plot data and create maps.

    To qualify at the GS-11 level you must meet the basic requirement AND have: 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-09 level in the Federal Service OR 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or equivalent doctoral degree in Archeology OR an equivalent combination of education and experience. Specialized experience for the GS-11 is defined as: work as an archeologist, working in the cultural resource field providing advice and guidance to team members, writing and editing cultural resource reports and reviewing the work of others, independently evaluating and interpreting cultural resources, working as a principal investigator or project manager on an archeological project, or working in a directly related field that included application of archeological principles, concepts and practices relating to management of cultural and historical resources, and work with an office or agency to coordinate, host, and lead consultation with multiple tribal governments.

    Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
