JOB PURPOSE:

The Center of Innovation for Flow through Porous Media (COIFPM) at the University of Wyoming is seeking multiple highly motivated senior research scientists to join its computational research branch located in Fort Collins, Colorado . The focus of the modeling team is to create advanced computational tools to simulate multiphase flow and transport processes in porous materials based on the fundamentals of pore-scale flow physics. To this end, massively parallelized, G PU-accelerated computational platforms are being developed, tested on state-of-the-art supercomputers, and validated against experimental data. The goal of this initiative is to bridge the gap between academic research and the needs of the geo-energy industry by developing solutions for the most complex subsurface flow problems.

The COIFPM team is a diverse group of experienced professionals dedicated to developing leading-edge Digital Rock Technology computational platforms. Examples of the team’s focus include: process digital images of porous media obtained at multiple (nano, micro, and macro) scales, generate representative computational domains, develop and enhance pore-scale models for multiphase flow and transport, and perform validation studies against experimental data. The overarching goal is to disrupt the current practice in geosciences, where continuum-scale models commonly utilize empirical correlations to produce flow functions needed to solve governing flow equations, by providing physics-based constitutive relations directly from a digital rock technology workflow. To achieve meaningful comparisons with experimental results, the computational platforms are developed to accommodate computational domains that are in one-to-one correspondence with their physical counterparts used in experimental studies (also conducted at COIFPM).

Successful candidates will be expected to integrate their skill sets into the digital rock technology workflow. This will require close collaboration with fellow research scientists and graduate students such that project milestones are met in a timely manner. Novel research findings are expected to be published in high-quality, peer-reviewed journals. Team members have access to advanced computational resources and well-characterized experimental data generated at COIFPM, the world’s largest experimental research center in this field, which is located at the University of Wyoming’s campus in Laramie, Wyoming.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

· Perform leading-edge research on computational modeling of multiphase flow and transport in porous media at the pore scale.

· Develop and improve on massively parallelized, GPU-accelerated computational platforms.

· Evaluate, implement, and apply efficient numerical methods to facilitate flow simulation in extra-large computational domains.

· Improve existing pore-scale models by incorporating new insights gained from experimental studies of multiphase flow at COIFPM.

· Communicate and interact with interdisciplinary project teams.

· Prepare research proposals, progress reports, and manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals.

· Present research findings at appropriate scientific meetings and conferences.

· Perform other related responsibilities as necessary.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

· Ph.D. degree in Computational/Applied Mathematics, Computational/Applied Physics, Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Petroleum Engineering, Chemistry, or a related discipline.

· Experience in developing software in C/C, Fortran, or similar languages.

· Experience in high-performance computing and parallel programming using, for example, MPI, CUDA, OpenACC, OpenCL, and OpenMP.

· Experience with high-performance numerical solvers such as PETSc.

· Interest in collaborative research initiatives and preference for working within a diverse group.

· Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

· Familiarity with professional software development practices such as software package management, unit testing, version control, and graphical user interfaces.

· Up-to-date knowledge of computer hardware and software architectures.

· Computational research experience outside of Ph.D. thesis research.

· Experience in high-level scripting languages such as Python and Julia.

· Demonstrated ability in developing high-quality, peer-reviewed scientific journal publications.
