GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

The Wyoming Game and Fish Department is seeking a temporary Brucellosis Technician. This position collects, processes, and submits blood and tissue samples from hunter harvested elk for brucellosis surveillance in the Bighorn Mountains. Must work long hours. Must work in adverse weather conditions. Must be able to operate a 4-wheel drive vehicle in winter driving conditions. Other duties as assigned. No supervisory role.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function which may be performed in the job level.

  • Collects blood and tissue samples from hunter harvested elk within the North Bighorn Elk Herd Unit for brucellosis surveillance.

  • Distribute blood sample collection kits to hunters, educates hunters about brucellosis and the proper techniques for collecting usable blood samples, and collect blood samples in the field at check stations and established collection points

  • Attempt to obtain lymph node tissue samples from freshly killed elk in order to aid in culturing the bacteria in a laboratory to possibly identify the source of the bacteria causing the disease

  • Responsible for processing blood and tissue samples daily and submitting them to the lab in Laramie weekly.

  • Collect hunter harvest information on elk and other big game species.

  • Assists with other duties as time allows.

Qualifications

PREFERENCES/AGENCY REQUIREMENTS:

Preference will be given to those with a high school diploma, plus two years of work experience in fish and wildlife resource management, research, or habitat development, or two years of college coursework toward a baccalaureate degree in wildlife management, ichthyology or other closely related field; other related training and experience will be evaluated for placement in this position.

Must have a valid driver's license.

KNOWLEDGE:

  • General knowledge of wildlife, including knowledge of cervid anatomy.

  • General knowledge of basic laboratory procedures.

  • Accurate data recording skills.

  • Use of scalpels and forceps.

  • Interpersonal communication skills.

  • Capable of operating a four-wheel drive vehicle.

Necessary Special Requirements

PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Ability to work outside in harsh winter conditions.

  • Weekend work is required.

  • Handling hunter harvested elk is required.

NOTES:

  • FLSA: Non-exempt

  • Preferred starting date of 9/23/19 through 9/30/19, position is estimated to last 2-3 months.

  • Lovell, Wyoming- field work will occur within the Wyoming Game and Fish Department's Cody and Sheridan Regions.

  • Housing is provided

  • All new hires or rehires starting in a non-exempt position on or after January 1, 2018 are required to be paid hourly.
