    Duties

    Summary

    Temporary positions not-to-exceed 1039 regular hours in a service year may be terminated sooner or extended depending on management needs.

    The typical seasonal entry-on-duty period is April through October, but can be variable during these months due to weather conditions, project needs, or funding. Anticipated Entry on Duty: April 2020

    Responsibilities

    The incumbent packages and transports various types of supplies and equipment to backcountry work sites throughout the park. Cares for and maintains stock and equipment in isolated backcountry areas. Shoes own pack string as well as assisting all corral operations with the shoeing of other park animals/stock if necessary. Incumbent will regularly operate trucks and tractor trailer combination units in excess of 32,000 gross vehicle weight, as well as any necessary heavy equipment (i.e. loaders, skid steer loaders, graders, dump trucks, etc.) and farm type machinery. May be called on to assist in trail work including building steps, drains and bridges. Will irrigate small pastures utilizing sprinkler & flood irrigation systems.

    Physical Demands: Incumbent is required to lift and move large heavy loads over 100 pounds on a regular basis. Awkward items such as rock drills, wood stoves, concrete bags, etc. must be placed onto mules and carried to remote work sites. Incumbent must walk, bend and ride on horseback for long hours. Required to lift, carry and secure awkward loads up to 100 lbs. onto the sides of animals at or above chest height and use arms to hold packs in position while hitching ropes. Incumbent must be able to adjust these loads along the trail in steep, rocky , or other poor footing situations. While preparing loads is constantly required to bend, squat, twist, lift, and load loads onto trucks for transport. Position requires that the incumbent have good physical stamina and strength in arms, back and legs to perform these required tasks safely and efficiently. Position also requires ability to walk up to 20 miles per day while carrying loads or leading multiple heads of stock.

    Work Environment: Incumbent will work at altitudes up to 10,000 feet, in all extremes of weather from wind, rain, snow, and cold, to hot, dry and dusty conditions. Temperatures range from 20F to 95F with sudden changes. There is danger of cuts, burns and hypothermia; danger of strained or pulled muscles due to the movement of animals while hitching or loading, shoeing, etc.; danger from animals crushing, striking, or biting. In order to insure safe operations, incumbents must wear at the least 6" high, full leather boots and heavy denim or other similar material long pants. Gloves, hard hats, and rain slickers will be provided. Incumbent will work with chainsaws and rock drills in dusty areas where visibility and breathing are compromised.

    • You will be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties; a valid driver's license is required. You will be required to submit a Motor Vehicle Operator's License and Driving Record. You must also submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that disclose all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you.
    • You must possess and maintain a current Class A-1 Commercial Driver's License with "Air Break" endorsement.
    • You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
    • You may be required to backcountry travel, overnight away from home, up to 16 nights per month.
    • Applicants must be at least (1)18 years old or (2) at least 16 years old and: (a) Have graduated from high school or been awarded a certificate equivalent to graduating from high school; or (b) Have completed a formal vocational training program; or (c) Have received a statement from school authorities agreeing with their preference for employment rather than continuing their education; or (d) Be currently enrolled in a secondary school and either work only during school vacation periods or work part-time during the school year under a formal student employment program.

    To qualify for this position, you must have sufficient knowledge and ability in the following job-related factors:

    Minimum Qualifications

    Applicants must show in their application package that they have 5 or more of the following skills listed below and show they possess a Class A CDL to meet the minimum qualifications for this grade level:

    • Work experience in a professional animal packing organization on backcountry trails (for example, Federal government, State government, or private outfitting operation).
    • Packed trail tools, supplies and equipment including decking, cement, and gravel to backcountry sites using both x-buck and decker saddles.
    • Shod and trimmed multiple horses and mules at a time.
    • Trail work including building dry stone and native log steps and drains, and building and repairing trail bridges.
    • Removed downfallen trees and branches using a chainsaw or crosscut saw.
    • Drove mule and/or horse teams to skid logs and plow trails.
    • Prepared, loaded and packed cargo on heavily trafficked backcountry trails to include trails over snow fields, steep terrain, short switch backs, and high flowing streams.
    • Loaded and unloaded stock from trailers.
    • Operated and maintained both flood and sprinkler small pasture irrigation systems consisting of pumps, pipes, risers, and birds.
