    Summary

    This position is located in Grand Teton National Park, in the Division of Science and Resource Management.

    Responsibilities

    This position is located in the Vegetation Ecology and Management Branch of the Division of Science and Resource Management at Grand Teton National Park. The incumbent plays a key role in the management of park resources through their role leading the Invasive Plant Management Program, providing expertise in natural resource management through interdisciplinary teamwork, and providing leadership to other vegetation management program areas. The vegetation branch consists of four permanent employees and 20-30 seasonal employees who collaborate with other park staff, volunteers, local and regional workgroups, and academic institutions to support the conservation of native plants and ecosystems. Grand Teton National Park is home to over 900 plant species, with a diverse array of communities ranging from shrub-steppe and riparian corridors to forested foothills and alpine tundra.

    The primary function of this biologist position is to oversee a comprehensive program of invasive plant management. Major duties include:

    • Supervise complex operations of 14-20 seasonal positions as well as large work groups, volunteers, and contractors.
    • Generate annual work plans; direct invasive plant treatments; prioritize species for survey and control; oversee data collection and treatment efficacy monitoring.
    • Work collaboratively with other Science and Resource Management staff, GRTE staff, and external partners; collaborate for science communication and education.
    • Apply current ecological restoration science, practice, and principles to invasive plant management and ecological restoration planning and implementation.
    • Serve on park interdisciplinary team for planning and design efforts, providing recommendations to avoid, minimize or mitigate resource impacts.
    • The incumbent will have a range of other duties occupying a smaller proportion of time that could include: range management, Integrated Pest Management (IPM), rare plant survey and monitoring and/or serving on local or regional committees or task forces.

    Work Environment: This work is performed both in an office setting and in the field with a greater portion of time in the office. Office work requires working at a computer for long periods of time and at times in meetings.

    Physical Demands: Field work may require work in harsh and varied weather out of doors, at high altitudes and require carry a pack (30-50 lbs) over varied terrain for extended periods of time. May require the operation of trucks and all-terrain vehicles. Assignments will require travel in terrain frequented by grizzly bears and/or other potentially dangerous wildlife.

    All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-04/07/2020-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement.

    Time-in-Grade Requirements: Any individual who is currently holding, or has held within the previous 52 weeks, a General Schedule position under non-temporary appointment in the competitive or excepted service, must meet time-in-grade requirements (must have served 52 weeks at the next lower grade or equivalent in the Federal service). Time-in-grade requirements must be met by the closing date of this announcement.

    BASIC REQUIREMENTS EDUCATION: There is a positive education position. You must meet one of the education requirements listed here along with the specialized experience list below. You MUST submit a copy of your transcripts/documentation that show how you meet the below requirements. If you do not submit proof your will be found not qualified.

    BASIC REQUIREMENT BIOLOGIST GS-401: Degree: 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree that included a major field of study in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position.ORCOMBINATION EDUCATION/SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE SUBSTITUTION BIOLOGIST GS-401:: Equivalent combination of education and experience that included course work equivalent to a major (i.e., 24 semester hours) in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or a discipline closely related to biology; PLUS appropriate experience or additional course work. The quality of the combination must demonstrate that you possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the work of the position and is comparable to that normally acquired through the completion of a full four-year course of study with a major as described above.

    To qualify for this position, you must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement:

    EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-09 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience includes activities such as: managing or supervising in invasive plant management, revegetation, habitat restoration, wetland delineation, native and nonnative plant identification, classification and taxonomy of vegetation types, reclamation and rehabilitation of disturbed lands, soil assessments and developing scientific monitoring of vegetation communities. You must include hours per week worked and the grade level of any federal position.-OR-EDUCATION: Successful completion of at PhD or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a PhD or equivalent graduate degree in a field that is directly related to biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, or related disciplines appropriate to the position. You must include transcripts.-OR-

    Successful completion of a combination of education and experience as described above. Experience and education should be computed as percentages of the overall requirements and must equal 100% when combined. Only graduate education in excess of the first 2 years is creditable when combined.

    NOTE: You must submit a copy of your school transcript(s) if qualifications are based on education. One year of graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that your graduate school has determined to represent one academic year of full-time study. Such study may have been performed on a full-time or part-time basis. If you cannot obtain your graduate school's definition of one year of graduate study, 18 semester hours (or 27 quarter hours) is considered as satisfying the requirement for one year of full- time graduate study.
