JOB SUMMARY

Under general supervision, supervises activities of the Med/Surg department nursing staff, including planning and organizing activities and department operations to ensure patient needs are met in accordance with physician instruction and hospital policy. Supports and empowers staff to embrace SMH mission and goals. Provides direct patient care as needed. Consults other departments, as appropriate, to collaborate in patient care and provide for an interdisciplinary approach.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Along with department manager, writes and conducts orientation and annual performance appraisals and clinical competency assessment, ensuring regular feedback, coaching, and communication with assigned employees.
  • Ensures high level of performance standards and achievement to meet organization needs and business goals.
  • Provides development opportunities for staff to broaden and enhance skills and abilities.
  • Administers organization policies and procedures.
  • Ensures compliance with safety policies and good housekeeping.
  • Manages initial training of new employees and ongoing training as required.
  • Keeps employees informed about their work assignment, work progress, and opportunities for advancement.
  • Promotes an environment that fosters teamwork and commitment to satisfy customer requirements.
  • With manager, participates in all aspects of employment cycle, including interviewing, hiring, performance evaluation and documentation, termination.
  • Provides development opportunities for staff to broaden and enhance skills and abilities.
  • Actively solicits feedback from NTLs regarding ongoing employee performances.
  • Provides general direction to Nursing Team Leaders for daily operations, staffing, clinical activities, huddles, safety and quality matters.
  • Regular reporting
  • Assists in the development of performance improvement/LEAN activities. Educates staff on the PI process. Participates in PI data collection, indicator development, and evaluation criteria, etc. Maintains appropriate quality control programs.
  • Participates in the development, implementation, review, and revision of departmental policies and procedures.
  • Ensures all rules and regulations are observed by employees, to include overall corporate compliance and compliance with JCAHO standards.
  • May participates as a clinical representative on the Patient Safety Committee. Ensures appropriate reports are submitted timely manner and communicates safety concerns as appropriate.
  • Implements and monitors adherence to evidence based clinical nursing practice consistent with nursing research, organizational, and national practice standards.
  • Assists in budget preparation.
  • Identifies gaps and collaborates with manager to initiate strategies to improve patient care, patient satisfaction, and employee satisfaction.
  • Identifies needs and sets goals for own growth and development; meets all mandatory organizational and departmental requirements.
  • Supports orientation and in-service training activities for nursing ensuring compliance with annual educational, safety, and regulatory requirements consistent with hospital policy and procedures.
  • Responsible for staff scheduling, timekeeping/payroll.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTSEducation / Experience / License and Certifications

  • BSN, preferred.
  • Current Wyoming Registered Nurse Licensure without restrictions.
  • BLS certification, required.
  • ACLS certification, required within one year of position start date.
  • Minimum three years of acute care experience, preferred.
  • Minimum one year of experience in department-specific area, preferred.
  • Minimum two years of supervisory experience, preferred.
  • NVCI certification within one year of position start date, required.
