- Maintains safe patient care by providing leadership and support to unit staff through supervision of clinical, administrative and bed placement functions
- Responsible for staffing decisions, addressing nursing concerns, and personnel issue during non-administrative hours
- Assist with ensuring the admission and transfer process is complete and timely through collaboration with the Medical Officer of the Day, Administrative Officer of the Day, and nursing staff
- Makes rounds on all units to evaluate patient care and staffing
- Provides clinical expertise and nursing leadership for staff
- Works closely with the Nurse Managers to ensure quality of care for Veterans and to provide input into performance and conduct of staff
- Offers coaching and counselling to the nursing staff to resolve problems both with conduct and clinical issues
- Responds to medical and mental health emergencies
- Prepares shift activity and staffing reports
- Completes chart reviews
- Responsible for gathering facts regarding events that occur during tour of duty
- Maintains current certification in Basic Life support and Advanced Critical Life Support
- Acts as a liaison among various patient care areas for providing comprehensive care to Veterans
- Provides staff education and training during non-administrative hours

The Nurse Officer of the Day (NOD) is a registered professional nurse, designated as the nursing management authority during the non-administrative hours of duty. The NOD will have a thorough working knowledge of clinical systems and overall operations of the Sheridan VAHCS.
