    Summary

    The Inpatient Geropsych Unit Social Worker functions as a member of an interdisciplinary team to provide mental health care, discharge planning, case management, treatment planning and strength-based and recovery-oriented treatment for Vets on the Geropsych Unit. Services may include process groups, classes, therapy groups, transitional groups, groups involving patient's family members, interdisciplinary and patient-centered discharge planning that will be coordinated with referring facilities.

    Position requires the ability to conduct psychosocial assessments with a wide variety of individuals from various socioeconomic, cultural, ethnic, educational, and other diversified backgrounds. Social worker is able to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with people from varied backgrounds.

    The social worker incorporates complex, multiple causation factors, in establishing differential diagnosis and treatment of Veteran patients, including making psychosocial assessments and psychiatric diagnoses. Demonstrates ability to assess the psychosocial functioning and needs of patients, formulate and implement a treatment plan, identifying the patient's problems, strengths, weaknesses, coping skills, and assistance needed.

    The social worker is responsible for developing a seamless discharge plan for patients. The social worker will work closely with VA and community-based outpatient treatment teams, programs, agencies, and other applicable resources in establishing and coordinating a referral process for follow up care as appropriate. Will possess and demonstrate ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with clients, staff, and representatives of community agencies, and may function as a liaison to the same. Possesses basic knowledge of Veteran benefits and services relating to special programs, service-connected compensation, non-service connected pension, etc. Facilitates referrals based upon veterans needs and eligibility.

    The social worker is responsible to work with high-risk patients, i.e. those with traumatic brain injury (TBI), Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Spinal Cord Injury (SCI), chronically mentally ill, suicidal patients, as well as other chronic or acute mentally ill individuals. They will demonstrate the ability to work with patients and families who are experiencing basic emotional, medical, and social problems utilizing individual, group, and family counseling skills.

    Qualifications

    To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements within 30 days after the closing date (09/25/2020) of this announcement.

    Basic Requirements:

    Citizenship: Must be a citizen of U.S. (Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.)

    Education: Have a master's degree in social work from a school of social work fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). Graduates of schools of social work that are in candidacy status do not meet this requirement until the School of Social Work is fully accredited. A doctoral degree in social work may not be substituted for the master's degree in social work.

    Licensure: Must be licensed or certified by a state to independently practice social work at the master's degree level. Note: VHA may waive the licensure or certification requirement for persons who are otherwise qualified, pending completion of state prerequisites for licensure/certification examinations. This exception only applies at the GS-9 grade level.

    English Language: Must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Chapter 3, section A, paragraph 3j.

    GRADE DETERMINATIONS: In addition to the Basic Requirements, candidates must meet requirement for grade level as outlined below.

    For GS-11

    Experience. Completion of a minimum of one year of post-MSW experience equivalent to the GS-9 grade level in the field of health care or other social work-related settings, (VA or non VA experience) and licensure or certification in a state at the independent practice level.

    OR

    Education. In addition to meeting basic requirements, a doctoral degree in social work from a school of social work may be substituted for the required one year of professional social work experience in a clinical setting.

    Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities.

    • Knowledge of community resources, how to make appropriate referrals tocommunity and other governmental agencies for services, and ability to coordinate services.
    • Skill in independently conducting psychosocial assessments and treatment interventions to a wide variety of individuals from various socio-economic, cultural, ethnic, educational and other diversified backgrounds.
    • Knowledge of medical and mental health diagnoses, disabilities and treatment procedures (i.e. acute, chronic and traumatic illnesses/injuries, common medications and their effects/side effects, and medical terminology) to formulate a treatment plan.
    • Skill in independently implementing different treatment modalities in working with individuals, families, and groups who are experiencing a variety of psychiatric, medical, and social problems to achieve treatment goals.
    • Ability to provide consultation services to new social workers, social work graduate students, and other staff about the psychosocial needs of patients and the impact of psychosocial problems on health care and compliance with treatment.

    Physical Requirements: This position provides direct services to patients and their families through casework. Incumbents must be physically and mentally able to efficiently perform the essential functions of the position without hazard to themselves or others. Normal work of the position requires visual acuity (with the ability to read typewritten characters without strain, corrective lenses permitted), keen hearing, clear distinctive speech, and manual dexterity. This position requires potentially moderate levels of lifting and carrying (15-44 pounds). The incumbent may occasionally be exposed to patients who are combative secondary to delirium, dementia, or psychiatric disorders. The incumbent must be a mature, flexible, sensible individual capable of working effectively in stressful situations, able to shift priorities based on patient needs. Must complete annual Employee Health requirements, such as annual TB screening or testing, as a condition of employment.
