    Summary

    The position is located in the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), Veterans Health Administration (VHA), at the Sheridan VA Medical Center (VAMC) in the Facilities Management Services. The primary purpose is to independently performs the full range of troubleshooting, malfunctiondiagnosis, overhaul, installation, maintenance, modification and corrective repairs for various types of electronics equipment characterized by moderate complexity of design, construction and function.

    Responsibilities

    Independently performs the full range of troubleshooting, malfunction diagnosis, overhaul, installation, maintenance, modification and corrective repairs for various types of electronics equipment characterized by moderate complexity of design, construction and function. Most equipment repaired comprises complete operation systems usually performing two or more substantially unrelated electronics function where each is dependent on the interaction of one segment to another in the performance of an orderly working totality. Components often and usually involve the presence of numerous and complex integrated circuitry and overall systems operability is impacted by the interface of components and their collective reliability. Malfunction diagnostics and repair of electronics equipment serviced require full-systems approach as functional problems in one portion of the system can often emanate from a seemingly unrelated source within the overall system. Test and repair needs diagnostics usually require the use of multiple test, measurement and diagnostics equipment in determining overall operability and isolating areas malfunction. Performs a variety of tasks.

    EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.

    SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the Job Elements:

    Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

    Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

    Physical Requirements: The employee performs tasks requiring moderate but not limited to strenuous physical exertion, including Heavy lifting and carrying (45 pounds and over), pushing, pulling, climbing, repeated bending (3 hour daily), stooping, crawling and kneeling (1 hour daily) and negotiating confined spaces, as well as occasionally heavy lifting (in excess of 50 pounds) and strenuous exertion. Reaching above shoulder, Use of fingers. Both hands and legs required. Operation of crane, truck, tractor, or motor vehicle. Depth of perception and both eyes required. Ability to distinguish colors and shades of colors. The employee is standing or walking much of the time and must be in good overall physical condition.Use manual or portable power tools for extended periods of time in uncomfortable positions. Construction work typically requires climbing on ladders, scaffolding and rooftops. With assistance may lift/move heavier items.

    Work Environment: When working in shop areas, exposed to moderate or high noise levels from machinery, sawdust, glue fumes and hazards related to power equipment. Work is performed outside and inside buildings but not limited to ventilated and unventilated conditions. Occasionally work may be performed in excessive heat and cold with dry atmospheric conditions. When working at project/construction sites ,exposed to prevailing weather conditions and hazards associated with working around /on scaffolding and ladders. Slippery or uneven walking surface. May work in confined areas such as crawl spaces and attics that are typically dusty and dirty. Ability to working closely with others and alone. Uses protective equipment. The employee works as part of a multidisciplinary team of maintenance personnel. As such, a wide variety of work outside of the carpentry trade will be required of the position. Additionally, the employee may be required to provide labor services that may include snow removal; cleaning, or other functions on an urgent need type basis.
