    Summary

    The General Equipment Mechanic position is located in the Sheridan VA Healthcare System, Facility Management Services.

    Maintain, troubleshoot and repair Facility Management mobile equipment; including but not limited to; emergency generators, road/grounds equipment, attachments and auxiliary systems. Responsible for the completion of the environmental aspect/impact analysis in collaboration with the GEMS Coordinator.

    Responsibilities

    Repairs/Maintains Heavy & Light Earth Moving & Grounds Maintenance Equipment

    Performs work involving mechanical skill to troubleshoot, repair, service and determine the cause of malfunctions on, Hustler mowers, John Deere mowers and tractors, TurboVac leaf rakes, Case front end loader, Caterpillar Extended Boom Backhoe, Mitsubishi and Lift King fork lifts and similar equipment which have mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and electric systems, controls, or features not commonly found on automobiles and ordinary transport trucks and buses. This includes all attachments and subsystems related to the equipment. These vehicles are powered by gasoline or diesel engines and use drive line torque converters and power take off units to drive equipment.

    Required to keep accurate maintenance records and operate a scheduling and maintenance program for all the equipment under his/her care.

    Occasional use of a 31,000 lb. GVW dump truck or trash truck, street sweeper and commercial snow plow for clearing station roads of snow and ice.

    Repairs Various Types of Utility Vehicles

    Conduct functional and performance tests on completed work assignments. Diagnose, repair, and overhaul various utility vehicles to include Kubota RTV1100, Polaris Ranger and other types of utility vehicles, including all routine maintenance necessary to maintain safe operating conditions.

    Thorough knowledge of hydraulic lifting, loading, turning and positioning systems and their mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, electrical, and electronic control, assemblies and connected accessory or auxiliary components. Sets up and operates machine tools to manufacture component parts or re-machine existing parts. Will be able to isolate and repair malfunctions by a combination of visual and auditory examinations, and the use of a wide variety of test equipment such as computerized engine analyzers, compression testers, test benches, oscilloscopes, multi-meters, and special feeler and dial gauges.

    Ability to disassemble, repair, replace, recondition, and rebuild components of the various systems, and make independent judgments based on specifications in technical manuals and on accepted trade practices.

    Installs, Maintains and Repairs Complex Laundry Equipment

    Ability to maintain, repair and install various types of technically complex heavy duty, commercial-type laundry equipment. Determines extent of repairs required, materials or parts needed and estimates time required to complete repairs. Interprets and applies the requirements of technical manuals, shop directives, multi-view blueprints and other documents to ensure correct adjustments and proper operation.

    Repairs and Maintains Various Auxiliary Equipment

    Installs equipment, parts and/or components. Conducts operational tests of the auxiliary equipment. Uses test equipment such as alignment scopes, Vernier calipers, micrometers, precision levels, strobe tachometers, bearing bridge gauges, flow meters, hydrostatic testers and vibration analyzers. Completes adjustments to ensure proper operation of entire system. Adjusts and sets various regulating or safety devices such as meters, gauges, governors and automatic alarms. Knowledge of tire repair and replacement.

    Patient Transportation

    Responsible for assisting in the GSA vehicle program. This includes keeping records, scheduling vehicles for service, monitoring repairs and assisting with the transportation of patients.

    Performs other related duties as assigned.

    Physical Requirements/Working Conditions:

    Physical Effort:

    They frequently lift and move heavier items with the assistance of other workers or with lifting devices such as jacks, hoists, and cranes. They are sometimes required to work from ladders or work platforms at varying heights. Daily tasks are of substantial physical effort in handling equipment and other heavy objects when they are installed. Incumbent will be required to work frequently standing, bending,

    reaching, stretching, climbing, and crouching. This position may require working on top of, under, and in tight compartments of vehicles or large equipment. Lifting and carrying items unassisted, weighing up to 23 kilograms (50 pounds), and often exert similar effort in pushing, pulling, and positioning parts, assemblies and equipment.

    Working Conditions:

    The work is usually performed inside and outside where there is exposure to drafts, noise, and fumes from vehicles. Occasionally performs work outside under adverse weather conditions. They are continually exposed to dirt, dust, and grease, and to the potential for burns, chemical irritations, shocks, bruises, cuts, and strains. Position is constantly subject to hand and eye injury while working around equipment. Exposed to considerable dust and noise when working around equipment. Use of personal protective equipment must be recognized and used.
