Duties

Summary

This position falls under the Facilities Management Service. Duties will consist of a wide variety of troubleshooting, repairing and providing preventive maintenance services for hospital buildings, systems and equipment. Use of tools, equipment and personal protective equipment will be regularly required. Lock-out and tag-out processes will be followed without exception. Maintenance workers will troubleshoot and obtain services of a journeyman when needed.

Responsibilities

Work assignments will come from the electronic work order system, assignments from supervisor, or emergent situations as reported by medical center staff. Employee will exercise judgement in prioritizing assignments unless otherwise directed by supervisor.

Electrical work will include all basic troubleshooting and repair to including, but not limited to, the following:

  • Light fixture repair to include bulb, blast and diffuser replacement
  • Circuit breaker resetting and troubleshooting
  • Equipment troubleshooting and repair
  • Electrical safety inspections for new and existing equipment
  • Fire alarm troubleshooting and operations
  • Emergency and standby generator operation, maintenance and testing
  • Secondary power distribution systems maintenance and troubleshooting to include overcurrent protection and emergency transfer switches
  • Primary power distribution operation and troubleshooting
Plumbing work will include all basic troubleshooting and repair to include, but not limited to, the following:

  • Domestic water distribution systems
  • Sanitary sewer systems
  • Storm sewer systems
  • Plumbing fixture repair and maintenance including flush valves, mixing valves, shower, faucets, lavatories and other fixtures
  • Steam system troubleshooting and repair including backflow prevention valves, steam control valves, radiators and coils.
Carpentry work will include all basic repairs to include, but not limited to:

  • Door and hardware repair, backup and assistance to the lock shop
  • Drywall and plaster repair
  • Wall and trim preparation and painting
  • Ceramic tile repair
  • Installation of rails, guards, and wall-hung items
  • Window and ballast repairs
  • Signage installation
  • Disassembling, moving, and reassembling furniture for station-wide office moves
Other duties will include assistance to other areas of the services and may include but it not limited to:

  • HVAC filter replacement
  • Cleaning
  • Furniture moving
  • Snow removal
  • Gutter and roof drain cleaning
ALL work will be recorded in the electronic work order system. Some work will be recorded in secondary records, such as generator logs or lamping logs.

Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.

    SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the Job Elements:

    Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

    Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

    Physical Requirements/Working Conditions:

    Work setting will be throughout the Sheridan VA campus, quarters, and outpatient clinics and will be primarily indoors although substantial amounts of outdoor work may be assigned occasionally. Conditions may be environmentally challenging to include hot, cold, and dusty. Work will include stooping, standing, bending and working in tight quarters. The employee will have the ability to carry 50 pounds or more on occasion.

    Personal Protective equipment (PPE) will be required to accomplish many of the assignments. Employee must meet physical requirements for use of PEE. Use of (PPE) is unconditionally required when warranted by particular duty.
