    Summary

    The Security Assistant Dispatcher serves in the Police Service, Office of the Associate Director, at the Sheridan VA Healthcare System, Sheridan, WY. Duties will include, but may not be limited to the following:

    Responsibilities

    • Receives and compiles information from various sources relating to police and emergency incidents, taking appropriate action regarding fire alarms, intrusion, duress and hold-up alarms, and direct response and/or notifies responsible personnel, depending on the type of incident or request.
    • Operates a variety of communication equipment, such as computers, alarm processors, radio consoles, SSTV systems, remote controllers, card access, time lapse video tape recorders and related peripherals.
    • Identifies malfunctioning equipment to the supervisor and follows internal procedures to ensure equipment is properly repaired.
    • Initiates the appropriate procedures when investigating physical fire alarm activations.
    • Dispatches a police officer to determine the cause of the activation and coordinate the appropriate response of fire department or facilities personnel to properly resolve situation.
    • Compiles and prepares reports relating to events occurring in the operation of the police operations office for dissemination of the completed product to various supervisors.
    • Monitors the operation of all communication/security and related electronic equipment daily.
    • Serves as the facility telephone operator during normal business hours.
    • Furnishes information to persons regarding Police Service policies and VA Regulations for the purpose of preventing infractions of VA Regulations and preventing unnecessary police response.

    Qualifications

    SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least GS-4 grade level in the Federal service that equipped you with the knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience include: having knowledge of agency, policy, procedures, technical manuals, and instructions for processing incoming and outgoing massages; operates a variety of communication equipment such as computers, alarm processors, intrusion/panic alarm system, other alarm systems, radio consoles, SSTV system, remote controllers, card access, time lapse video tape recorders, and pertinent equipment; understanding applicable federal and state criminal codes, police and medical terminology, codes as it applies to the operation of the position; composes written English documentation and enters data into the computer terminal, and ability to performs basic trouble-shooting and testing techniques to determine possible cause of equipment malfunctions.ORSUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED): Successfully completed education above the high school level in any field for which high school graduation or the equivalent is the normal prerequisite. ORCOMBINATION OF EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED): Equivalent combinations of successfully completed post-high school education and specialized experience may be used to meet total qualification requirements.

    Physical Requirements: The work requires extended periods of sitting while operating systems, monitoring the CCTV, receiving telephone calls, and operating the police communications system. Additionally, extended periods of keyboarding may be required to complete computer requirements and/or typing. Most of the time the employee is performing seated work. May require some walking, standing, bending, climbing stairs and carrying and/or lifting of light items such as papers and books. No special physical demands are required to perform the work.

    Receiving Service Credit for Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. VA may offer newly-appointed Federal employee's credit for their job-related non-federal experience or active duty uniformed military service. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave. Such credit must be requested and approved prior to the appointment date and is not guaranteed.
