    Summary

    The Security Assistant Dispatcher serves in the Police Service, Office of the Associate Director, at the Sheridan VA Healthcare System, Sheridan, WY. Duties will include, but may not be limited to the following:

    Responsibilities

    Monitors and directs response to security and life safety communications, radio dispatching, telephone and other emergency communication circuits.

    Monitors the operation of all communications/security and related electronic equipment using

    physical line of site in position.

    Reports and submits electronic work orders to correct any discrepancy to ensure that appropriate action is taken.

    Identifies malfunctioning equipment to the supervisor and follows internal procedures to ensure equipment is properly repaired.

    Initiates the appropriate procedures when investigating physical fire alarm activations.

    Monitors and operates the CCTV camera surveillance system comprised of over 200 cameras daily through direct line of sight at the facility.

    Monitors over 350 intrusion/panic alarm computer systems and other alarm panels at the police operations office and assures that the alarms are operational and when necessary, dispatches police or other personnel as required, to immediately investigate alarm activations and other problems.

    Advises police supervisor of the situation and enter appropriate documentation in the computerized police daily journal as required.

    Operates a variety of communications and security equipment such as computers, multifrequency law enforcement/emergency two-way radios, multi-line telephone system, and other related peripherals.

    Maintains accurate radio/alarm activity records/logs to include dates, times and results of communication and activities and types completed reports.

    Compiles and prepares Daily Operation Journals (DOJ) reports related to events occurring in the operation of the police control center for dissemination of the completed products to various

    management officials.

    Screens incoming calls for police assistance and must prioritize which calls by significance to determine which calls officers are dispatched to first based on police officers on duty.

    Qualifications

    SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE GS-5: Applicants must have one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least GS-4 grade level in the Federal service that equipped you with the knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience includes: having general administrative and/or clerical skills, practical knowledge of specific security or law enforcement objectives, programs, methods, and procedures, and skills in carrying out support tasks related to law enforcement and security administration; understanding of police operations to detect criminal activity via the CCTV system for the protection of patients, visitors, employees and property; having practical knowledge of standard procedures in a technical field, requiring extended training or experience, to perform such work as adapting equipment when this requires consideration of the functioning characteristics of equipment; capable of interpreting results of tests based on previous experience and observations or extracting information from various sources; maintaining a general knowledge of the operations of the CCTV camera surveillance systems, computers, police radio communications systems, telephone systems, panic/intrusion alarm systems, law enforcement databases; police and medical terminology, and federal and state criminal codes.ORSUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE GS-5 (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED): ): Successfully completed four (4) years of education above the high school level in any field. This education must have been obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university for which high school graduation or the equivalent is the normal prerequisite.

    ORCOMBINATION OF EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE GS-5 (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED): Equivalent combinations of successfully completed post-high school education and specialized experience may be used to meet total qualification requirements.

    Physical Requirements: The work requires extended periods of sitting while operating systems, monitoring the CCTV, receiving telephone calls, and operating the police communications system. Additionally, extended periods of keyboarding may be required to complete computer requirements and/or typing. Most of the time the employee is performing seated work. May require some walking, standing, bending, climbing stairs and carrying and/or lifting of light items such as papers and books. No special physical demands are required to perform the work.

    Receiving Service Credit for Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. VA may offer newly-appointed Federal employee's credit for their job-related non-federal experience or active duty uniformed military service. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave. Such credit must be requested and approved prior to the appointment date and is not guaranteed.
