    Summary

    The employee performs as a Social Services Assistant to the Mental Health Residential Rehabilitation Treatment Program (MHRRTP) VAMC Sheridan, WY. The MHRRTP program is a specialized treatment program provides residential bio psychosocial rehabilitation treatment to veterans with psychiatric disorders, psychoactive substance use disorders, and/or psychosocial problems.

    Responsibilities

    • Orient residents to MHRRTP policies and procedures. Prepares and assembles appropriate admission items for admissions in advance.

    • Conducts initial structured assessment of resident's level of independent and communal functioning.
    • Assessment includes, but is not limited to, the resident's ability to take prescribed medication roperly, keep personal area clean, attend to personal grooming and hygiene, interact appropriately with other residents, and accept and execute the resident's share of MH communal responsibilities. Document findings in the resident's clinical records.
    • Make recommendations to the resident's case manager for modifications to the resident's individualized treatment-rehabilitation plan, as necessary.
    • Perform diagnostic support duties such as taking, recording and reporting vital signs; oversees urine specimen collection and preparation of submission to the laboratory for drug screen analysis; and administers breathalyzer as an alcohol screen; records test results accurately per MHRRTP policy.
    • Regularly inspects the MHRRTP (including resident living areas) and surrounding grounds for compliance with health, safety, and security policies. Supports Incentive Therapy program; assigns household maintenance and other routine responsibilities to residents.

    • Establishes and maintains therapeutic relationship with MHRRTP residents. Intervene therapeutically to resolve behavior problems, conflicts with or between residents, and/or failure of residents to follow established MHRRTP guidelines or staff instructions. Documents such interventions in Computerized Patient Record System (CPRS). Documentation will meet relevant Joint Commission, Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities, and VA standards. Notify resident's case manager and MHRRTP management of such intervention.

    • Summons emergency personnel immediately for residents in medical and/or behavioral crisis. Assist such personnel in stabilizing and/or evacuating the resident.
    • Assist in facilitating groups to increase understanding of substance disorders, PTSD, homelessness and to improve interpersonal skills, and facilitate behavioral and attitudinal changes in the residents.

    Work Schedule: Incumbent could work rotating shifts.     Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-5 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-4 The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade.

    You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below:

    • Specialized Experience: Group leader in community or residential recreation or training programs; counselor in a youth summer camp; instructor in a training program for the development of job skills; work that demonstrated the ability to be responsible for and to lead and train members of a job crew; group activities leader in the Armed Services; unit leader-monitor-proctor for a dormitory group in a boarding school or other residential facility; aid or assistant to professional or specialist staff in such fields as personnel (private or government), social services, or who work with individuals who are addicted to or abuse alcohol and/or drugs, nursing assistant work OR,

    • Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have Four years of education, above high school, may be substituted for the experience requirement for GS-05. Successfully completed education above the high school level in any field for which high school graduation, or the equivalent, is the normal prerequisite is creditable. This education must have been obtained in an accredited business, secretarial, or technical school, junior college, college or university. Certified transcripts are required if substituting education for required experience OR,

    • Combination: Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level.

    Physical Requirements: See VA Directive and Handbook 5019.Physical demands are generally moderate. Work may involve demonstration of cleaning and other household maintenance tasks to MHRRTP residents. There may be stress involved in dealing with persons in emotional distress and who may be uncooperative and occasionally assaultive. Most work will be performed while sitting, walking, or talking. Mild physical activity can be expected such as exercise or outdoor recreational activities.

    Work Environment: Work is performed primarily in a patient care setting; adequately lighted, temperature controlled, and ventilated. May be exposed to outside and inside conditions; along with electrical energy, slippery or uneven walking surfaces. Ability to work closely with others and also alone. Office temperatures fluctuate periodically; involves everyday risks or discomforts which require normal safety precautions typical of such places as clinics, offices, meeting and training rooms or libraries; exposure to noise and dust on occasion. The work area is adequately lighted, heated, and ventilated.
