JOB SUMMARY

This ultrasound professional is qualified by professional credentialing and academic and clinical experience to provide diagnostic cardiac patient care services using ultrasound and related diagnostic procedures. This staff person will be able to perform studies independently with the ultrasound equipment and be able to communicate results of the diagnostic examination. He / she will be responsible for daily operations of the laboratory, patient schedule and conflicts, equipment maintenance, the report of equipment failures, and quality assessment (QA). A high standard of medical ethics will be maintained at all times. It is expected that this staff member be self-motivated to increase level of understanding and knowledge of the field, disease, and new procedures as they evolve. Employees will participate in performance improvement and CQI activities as necessary. Other duties may include assisting in office procedures, supply inventory management, cleaning and organizing exam rooms and equipment, scheduling and assisting in patient reception services and office coordinator duties as necessary. The position requires excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate with a multi-disciplinary team of professionals as well as healthcare consumers.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Performs clinical assessment and diagnostic sonographic examinations.
  • Uses cognitive sonographic skills to identify, record, and adapt procedures as appropriate to anatomical, pathological, diagnostic information and images.
  • Uses independent judgment during the sonographic exam to accurately differentiate between normal and pathologic findings.
  • Analyzes studies and communicates findings to the appropriate physician.
  • Coordinates work schedule to assure workload coverage.
  • Coordinates daily operation of laboratory.
  • Maintains a daily log of patients seen and arranges for studies to be sent to consulting physicians.
  • Maintains ultrasound equipment and adequate supplies in work area.
  • Coordinates and participates in the laboratory accreditation.
  • Performs patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety / comfort and reduces the likelihood of medical / health care errors.
  • Knowledgeable of Infection Control, TB, Blood borne Pathogens and Hazardous waste plans.
  • Demonstrates ability to perform tests and provide services within scope of practice.
  • Communicates appropriately and clearly with all health care team members.
  • Consults other departments as appropriate to provide for an interdisciplinary approach to the patient’s needs.
  • Demonstrates an ability to assist physicians with procedures and performs services requiring technical and manual skills.
  • Demonstrates an ability to be flexible, organized and function well under stressful situations.
  • Treats patients and their families with respect and dignity. Identifies and addresses psychosocial, cultural, ethnic and religious/spiritual needs of patients and their families.
  • Functions as liaison between the patient/family, physicians, other healthcare providers and administration.
  • Maintains a good working relationship both within the department and with other departments.
  • Documentation meets current standards and policies.
  • Demonstrates the ability to use the PACs system and the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) to gather data and input quality information for reporting measures.
  • Assists in successful implementation of programs to improve coding and reimbursement for office-specific procedures.
  • Assists the physician(s) and physician assistant(s) in addressing hospital and clinic related issues, serves as a liaison and representative of Big Horn Health Network in resolving problems and participates on committees as appropriate.
  • Work will include setting common goals, merging resources, providing education, and cross training roles.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education / Experience / License and Certifications

  • Graduate of a formal Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program or Cardiovascular Technology Program that is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied health Education Programs (CAAHEP), required.
  • Active certification through an accredited program for Diagnostic Medical Sonographers in specialty.
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Diagnostic Medical Sonography, preferred.
  • Two plus years of Echo / on the job training will be done for Stress Echos, if no experience.
  • Registered in Pediatric Echocardiography, preferred
  • Current compliance with Continuing Medical Education (CME) requirements for specialty.
  • A minimum of three (3) years hospital and / or cardiac clinic experience.
  • BLS certification, required.
  • RDCS (Radiology Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer), preferred.
  • ACLS certification required within one year of start date.
