JOB SUMMARY

Responsible for designing, planning, implementing, instructing and evaluating education for newly hired staff as well as current staff in annual ongoing education and competencies. Develops educational policies and procedures. Serves as an expert clinical nurse resource, coach and mentor to clinical staff. Consults with clinical staff, physicians and nurse managers to assess educational/training needs. Coordinates internal in-services and external workshops. Utilizes knowledge of adult learning theories and methodologies. Compiles educational reports and trends data. Plans, develops, coordinates and instructs the annual Nurse Residency Program, Oversees clinical preceptor and orientation processes. Utilize simulation based methodologies for clinical nursing education.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Assist Nurse Managers/Nursing Leadership Team and learners in the assessment of needs and identification of outcomes.
  • Conducts learning needs assessments for various learner abilities using a variety of strategic tools.
  • Incorporates principles of adult learning in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of education programs.
  • Adjusts content and teaching strategies appropriate to learner needs and abilities.
  • Develops/Coordinates/Instructs/Evaluates clinical orientation programs for new nursing staff to the organization.
  • Develops/coordinates/instructs education plans related to initial and ongoing competency validation.
  • Delivers competence-based programs for nursing staff with a focus upon improvement of skills and retention of knowledge.
  • Instructs certification programs, (eg ACLS, PALS, TNCC) and annual education skills sessions.
  • Plans, prepares and maintains materials for use in educational programs for accuracy and relevance to the target audience.
  • Develops hospital policies/procedures using knowledge of evidenced-based practice and industry standards for best practice
  • Plans, Develops, instructs, coordinates and evaluates an annual Nurse Residency Program for the facility
  • Identifies and evaluates instructional materials in all types of media and formats.
  • Keeps current with changes, new technologies and equipment and new teaching methodologies.
  • Provides educational opportunities that benefit nurses at all stages of their career development.
  • Develops evidence-based educational materials.
  • Contacts appropriate manager if a staff member is not meeting the education requirements of the organization.
  • Evaluates the effectiveness of educational programming.
  • Follows appropriate protocols when writing grant proposals.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of current leadership, management and performance improvement concepts and the ability to participate in developing and implementing organizational strategies to address patient care.
  • Facilitates the adult learning process, creating a climate which supports learning across the Department of Nursing.
  • Identifies and recruits internal and external resources (nurse, physician, other specialists) for educational activities.
  • Coordinates educational activities (includes continuing education credit, clinical affiliations, nurse residency, etc.).
  • Participates in committees, task forces, projects for areas of coverage.
  • Facilitates teambuilding and leadership development for areas of coverage.
  • Participates in review of activities or processes for area of coverage and department.
  • Serves as an educational consultant to: the facility, task forces, committees and projects relating to policy, procedure and program development.
  • Responds to regulatory mandates for research and management of sentinel events.
  • Responds to identified needs to promote quality patient care and safety.
  • Collaborates to recommend educational strategies for the implementation of clinical standards.
  • Consults with staff regarding individual learning needs.
  • Responds to changes in nursing practice and develops programs to support those changes.
  • Ensures that educational programs are congruent with organizational missions, values and goals.
  • Maintains flexibility when managing multiple roles and responsibilities.
  • Interprets and communicates across multiple disciplines.
  • Serves as a role model to promote excellence and safety.
  • Maintains required educational and/or clinical competencies.
  • Seeks opportunities to develop staff in various roles.
  • Integrates ethical principles in all aspects of practice.
  • Serves as a role model for education and professional nursing practice.
  • Role models and promotes the concept of lifelong learning.
  • Leads committees, work groups and/or projects related to the implementation of educational activities.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.
  • Ensures continuing education opportunities for staff.
  • Arranges for adequate instructor staffing for programs.
  • Assists/mentors new instructors for certification courses (eg AHA programs per the organization’s needs).
  • Assures staff nurse instructors remain current in instructor status including evaluating the instructor on a regular basis.
  • Organizes staff education efficiently. Inclusive of producing a yearly SMH Education Calendar.
  • Helps develop Education’s annual goals and objectives that align with the organization's goals and objectives.
  • Assists staff in problem solving and formulating plans to increase independence and autonomy.
  • Coordinates the Foundation Scholarship practicum including mentorship of the new graduate nurse.
  • Efficiently plans and organizes conferences and seminars.
  • Community outreach education
  • Participates in regional groups, VHA, etc.
  • Maintains up-to-date educational records for employees.
  • Participates in the performance evaluation of new or probationary employees, regular employees and employees being considered for termination, if requested, by Nursing Managers.
  • Attends the nursing leadership team meetings a minimum of 75% of as well as assigned committees and taskforces.
  • Uses, incorporates and/or develops the following educational materials:
  • Websites, DVDs, podcasts, PowerPoint presentations, online learning module and all Learning Management Systems.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS

Education / Experience / License and Certifications

  • Current unrestricted Wyoming Registered Nurse license.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing, preferred.
  • Minimum 1 year of experience in an educator role preferred.
  • Minimum 3 years of acute care experience, required.
