GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

Use your skills to make a difference in your community! This part-time position (up to 30 hours a week) promotes positive health outcomes for the participants of the Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) Program through nutrition assessment, breastfeeding promotion and support, and program referrals in Sheridan County. The individual in this position provides quality care to WIC participants by developing caring and compassionate relationships within the healthcare community and by offering evidence-based nutrition education and breastfeeding support. This position ensures compliance with federal and state regulations. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function which may be performed in the job level.

  • Develops and documents care plans for high-risk and low-risk participants, including goal setting, behavior modification, and plans for follow-up.

  • Conducts bi-annual participant nutrition assessments, including anthropometric measurements and hematologic testing.

  • Appropriately assigns nutrition risks based on WIC Program Policy and Procedure.

  • Collaborates in the community regarding nutrition and breastfeeding initiatives to determine the current needs of target populations.

  • Determines eligibility for WIC applicants.

  • Assists in coordinating participant care and referrals.

  • Assigns and educates participants on individualized food packages based on medical need and physician documentation.

  • Serves as a nutrition and breastfeeding resource within the local community.

  • Provides individual and group nutrition and breastfeeding education.

  • May assist with ordering, inventory, maintenance, and issuance of local agency equipment, products, and supplies in accordance with State WIC Policy and Procedure.

  • Keeps current on nutrition and breastfeeding information.

  • Presents a positive attitude toward healthy eating and breastfeeding.

  • Assists with organizing community outreach efforts between the WIC Program and community organizations serving similar demographics.

  • Models and facilitates integration of cultural sensitivity and health equity.

  • May assist with the development and implementation of the local agency annual nutrition education plans to address breastfeeding and nutrition priorities.

  • May serve as a local agency high-risk nutrition counselor and/or breastfeeding coordinator and/or peer counselor site facilitator.

Qualifications

PREFERENCES:

Preference may be given to applicants who have a four-year degree in Nutrition, Dietetics, Nursing, or Public Health Nutrition.

Preference may be given to applicants who have a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN).

Preference may be given to applicants who are registered dietitians (RD).

Preference may be given to applicants who have bilingual skills in Spanish and English, but is

not required.

KNOWLEDGE:

  • Knowledge of WIC rules and regulations applicable to position.

  • Knowledge of principles and practices of public health nutrition, maternal and child health, breastfeeding support, growth assessment and monitoring, education/counseling, and participant care planning, monitoring and follow-up for women, infants, and children.

  • Skill in hematologic and anthropometric screening and assessment preferred.

  • Knowledge of Value Enhanced Nutrition Assessment (VENA) and motivational interviewing experience.

  • Skills in providing adult education and knowledge of group dynamics.

  • Skills in interpersonal communication and developing relationships with the public and representatives of community resource agencies.

  • Skill in oral and written communication.

  • Must possess a high level of intuitive skills, deductive reasoning, and adaptability in a changing environment.

  • Experience with electronic medical records.

  • Knowledge of how to maintain a steady/smooth clinic flow.

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of participant information.

  • Basic knowledge of the WIC Program including policies and procedures preferred.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:

Bachelor's Degree (typically in Healthcare)

Experience:

0-2 years of progressive work experience (typically in Health Programs)

OR

Education & Experience Substitution:

3-5 years of progressive work experience (typically in Health Programs)

PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Travel Required.

NOTES:

  • FLSA: Non-exempt.

  • All new hires or rehires starting in a non-exempt position on or after January 1, 2018 are required to be paid hourly.

  • Part time, benefited position working 28 - 30 hours/ week.

  • A background check, including the taking of fingerprints, will be completed through the Wyoming Department of Criminal Investigation, the Department of Family Services and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, for every successful applicant.
