Ashley Fellowship Program was named in honor of Al Ashley, who retired from SLAC in 1999 after 31 years of dedicated and exemplary service, particularly in the area of championing diversity in the sciences and engineering. During his tenure at SLAC, Al pioneered programs that promoted diversity and encouraged career development for employees and career exploration for talented students. He was a recipient of a 2005 NSF Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics, and Engineering Mentoring in recognition of his outstanding mentoring efforts and programs that enhanced the participation of historically underrepresented groups in science, mathematics, and engineering. Al served as a mentor to hundreds of emerging scientists and engineers during their journey to their chosen fields.This program is designed to provide a year-long research/employment experience in each of our six major directorates. The program is intended for post-graduate candidates with the longer-term objective of potentially moving them into regular employment with the lab.Note: This is a 12-month fixed-term position with the possibility of extension or conversion to a regular- continuing position. Assignment duration is contingent upon project needs and funding.Position overview:SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory seeks an entry-level mechanical engineer for the Accelerator Directorate. The mission of the Accelerator Directorate is to ensure efficient and reliable operation of SLAC¿s accelerator facilities. The Accelerator Directorate¿s Mechanical Engineering and Technical Services (METS) Division develops, fabricates, and maintains these facilities. This position reports to the department head of Mechanical Engineering and Vacuum Engineering in the METS Division of the Accelerator Directorate.Given the nature of this position, SLAC will require onsite work.Your specific responsibilities include:

Perform computer-aided engineering/analysis and design of mechanical components, including component conceptualization, tolerance analysis, and materials selection.

Prepare engineering documentation including specifications, technical reports, test plans, and presentations in compliance with engineering and SLAC/Directorate standards.

Collaborate with engineers and technical staff in manufacturing planning, vendor communication, and procurement tracking.

Coordinate integration of mechanical devices with other systems, including electrical, controls, and facilities.

Inspect / test mechanical components upon receipt / installation.

Participate in engineering design reviews.

Other duties may also be assigned.

To be successful in this position you will bring:

Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, physics or related science and engineering discipline.

Demonstrated strong analytical and problem-solving skills combined with creative and innovating thinking.

Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as in a team environment.

Demonstrated ability to use parametric CAD software and the Windows computing environment.

Demonstrated ability to give presentations at discipline-specific or project meetings.

Demonstrated ability to adjust and adapt to changing work priorities.

In addition, preferred requirements include:

Experience with Solid Edge.

Experience with mechanical design, procurement, fabrication, assembly, and testing.

Experience performing mechanical analysis (structural, thermal, vibrational, etc).

SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory/Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position.
