The Florida Department of Health (DOH) is responsible for the health and safety of all citizens and visitors to the state. As a public health agency, the Florida Department of Health must monitor the health status of Floridians, diagnose, and investigate health problems, and mobilize local communities to address health-related issues. The Florida Department of Health develops policies and plans that support health goals, enforce laws and regulations that protect the health of all residents and visitors, and link people to needed health care services. The Florida Department of Health also provides specialized assistance to pregnant women, infants, and children with special health care needs, regulates health care practitioners, and provides medical disability determinations. Title of Position: Senior Health Educator This position will serve in the Health Promotion and Education division of Community Health teaching and promoting the Diabetes Self-Management Education Program, and the National Diabetes Prevention Program, our Get into Fitness Today program, and our children’s health and wellness program, along with other obesity and chronic disease programs as needed in both English and Spanish. Works independently under the supervision of the Public Health Nutrition Consultant. The Health Promotion and Education Program promotes a creative and low stress work environment where staff are encouraged to bring their professional and personal expertise from the healthcare, and public health fields to the workplace, and to be innovative and creative in work products, marketing efforts and program delivery. Professional enhancement is supported and highly encouraged. This is work promoting, maintaining, and improving individual and/or community health by assisting individuals and communities to adopt healthy behaviors. Senior Health Educators collect and analyze data to identify individual and/or community needs prior to planning, implementing, monitoring, and evaluating programs and/or services designed to encourage healthy lifestyles, policies, and environments. Incumbents may also serve as a resource to assist individuals, other professionals, or the community, and may administer fiscal resources for health or nutrition education programs. Your Specific Responsibilities:

Work as a team in teaching diabetes classes and other health and chronic disease topics to the lay public, community groups, worksite groups and other health professionals.

Provide trainings on wellness programs to the community and/or other oragnziations.

Act as a Liaison between other health professionals in the community and the Health Department working with adults and children promoting/marketing diabetes education, obesity and chronic disease prevention to the public and medical community.

Promote the agency and its programming to the community and health professionals to increase referrals to diabetes, diabetes prevention classes.

Assist in designing, developing and presenting literature, information brochures, program materials, presentations on obesity and chronic disease topics, as assigned.

Coordinate with health and social services according to need.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others (team members, external partners, stakeholders)

Ability to communicate effectively in both English and Spanish-both verbally and in writing and through empathic listening and to elicit information as appropriate to the needs of the audience.

Ability to listen to and understand information and ideas presented through spoken words and sentences.

Ability to provide professional presentations.

Ability to plan, organize and coordinate work activities.

Ability to operate commonly used office equipment such as computers, printers, fax machine and paper shredder.

Ability to use Microsoft Office products (Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, knowledge of Access database software is a plus).

Ability to multi-task

Knowledge of correct grammar usage and basic arithmetic.

Ability to prepare reports and correspondence

Ability to follow instructions

Ability to review data for accuracy and completeness

Ability to create, implement and maintain a user-friendly filing system

Qualifications:

Minimum:

At least one year of experience marketing, promoting, or providing professional presentations

At least one year of experience working with individuals suffering from obesity, diabetes, pre-diabetes or other chronic diseases

At least one year of experience facilitating group education for diabetes or other chronic diseases

Fluent in reading, writing, and speaking in Spanish

Preferred:

Experience facilitating trainings to groups of individuals

Bachelor’s or master’s degree in public health, biology, nutrition, or a health-related field from an accredited college or university
