Field Hands part-time and full-time
Farmer Blue is a Cut Flower Farm in Dale, SC growing florist grade annuals, herbaceous perennials and woodies to customers in Savannah and Charleston. As 85% of flowers sold in the US are imported, the focus of domestic growers is on flowers that do not ship well, are difficult to grow or have a short shelf life. To supply this diversity our growing mediums include soil, compost, bogs and aquaculture. Growing flowers is primarily hand work, but it is quiet. Though not organic, our practices discourage synthetic inputs. Our pest management program includes soil health, species diversity, banker plants and cats.
The tasks for field help vary by the day and season but could include seeding, transplanting, cultivation, harvesting, post-harvest treatments, compost management, fertilizing, spraying, pest management and water and soil testing.
Ideal flower farm hands are people that like to be outside, can manage multiple tasks, observant and love to grow things. The wage is $15 per hour; more if someone has appropriate experience.
