Mission Statement:

Bean's Cafe exists to fight hunger, one meal at a time, while providing a pathway to self-sufficiency with dignity and respect.

Job Summary:

The Cook/DMO, under the direct report to the Sous Chef, assists in preparing, portioning and the cooking for a wide variety of hot and cold meals; is proactive regarding menu preparation requirements and time allocations; holds overall knowledge of the kitchen’s day to day inventory reporting and control; participates in a variety of duties in food preparation, cooking and end-delivery food serving; all while ensuring that quality, cost effectiveness and sanitization measures are followed and sustained at all times.

Supports Vision:

The Cook/DMO supports the mission of Bean’s Cafe by preparing the meals that feed the Anchorage Community members and by ensuring a safe kitchen environment is maintained for all team members.

Duties/Responsibilities:

Independently perform basic food prep including washing, peeling, and cutting; mixing ingredients and adding seasonings; trimming, cutting and seasoning meats, poultry and/or fish.

Complete hot meal final preparations including, but not limited to, by grilling, sautéing, roasting, frying, and broiling ingredients, assembling, and refrigerating cold ingredients.

Ensure that all meals are prepared according to specification and served at the correct quality, portion size and temperature.

Oversees the accuracy of appropriate dating, labelling, and rotation of all food items, and storage of leftovers according to established standards.

Assist in the management of meal logs ensuring accurate meal production records and inventory records.

Provide service of the meals at a set daily time and have deliveries ready as needed.

Operate and maintain a variety of kitchen equipment in an efficient, effective, and safe manner.

Clean and sanitize work areas and food supply storage areas, ensuring the kitchen is always clean and clear of garbage and hazardous clutter.

Ability to be trained, execute, and meet program requirements and expectations; including but not limited to, grants and USDA programs.

Comply with all safety and risk policies, procedures; participates in workplace training; reports all accidents and injuries in a timely manner.

Ability to work cooperatively with fellow team members, students, and volunteers.

May perform other duties and job responsibilities as assigned or needed.

Education and Experience: 

Obtain an Alaska Food Handler’s card within 30 days of employment; renew every 3 years.

At least 18 years of age.

Legal right to work in the United States.

Access to a dependable vehicle and/or transportation.

Undergo a background check (please note; undergoing a background check will not inhibit you from being hired – Bean's Cafe is a Second Chance Employer).   

Physical / Work Attire Requirements:

Ability to physically able to stand for at least 8 hours. 

Ability to reach, bend, stoop, push and/or pull, and frequently lift to 50 pounds. 

Always wear proper work attire, including slip resistant shoes. 

A controlled working environment is primarily provided, however may be exposed to heat/cold during supporting outdoor food service activities.
