Learn more at www.te.com Job Descriptions: The Staff R&D Product Development Engineer will support the Sockets portfolio for the Data and Devices Business Unit of TE Connectivity. In this role you will be responsible for developing high performance Sockets products as the primary engineering contact of the Sockets engineering team for US based customers. You will be responsible for defining product requirements and supporting the execution of the product development projects from a technical perspective by closely interacting with local customers and providing technical guidance to the product development team. Since the product requirements may not be clear during the early phases of customer engagement, your role will be to help customers build their detailed technical requirements by providing assumptions and design options that best align with their needs. You will be suggesting the technology development requirements based on the customers' perspective and the technical requirement creation should be done by closely interacting with the product management, product development engineering, and manufacturing engineering teams in Asia (Japan, Taiwan and China). During the product development execution you will provide the customer engineering data and information, such as product concept, dimensional analysis results, simulation data, and test data to get their feedback throughout the process to ensure the product meets their requirements. You will be also responsible to identify future Sockets technology requirements based on interactions with the customers and with TE's System Architecture team as well as sharing that information to include in product and technology roadmaps and technology benchmarking RESPONSIBILITIES- Understand the customer's technical requirements for Sockets product and create the technical aspect of the product requirements by interacting with the product manager (PM) and product development engineering (PDE) team
- Explore the detailed technical requirements including the implicit key customer needs often by creating and proposing conceptual design assumptions of the customer's system, i.e. semi-conductor package design, socket cramping hardware system design, heatsink design and translate them into the product requirements
- Provide product design proposals and the engineering data to the customers with the understanding of business strategy, product advantages, manufacturing technology background and cost structure
- Respond to the engineering inquiries from the customers in timely manner directly, or by coordinating the response with PDE team
- Understand the customers' value proposition from its technical aspect and provide the technical priority of the electrical and mechanical functionality to PDE team
- Find out the customer applications and its use condition for defining the reliability requirements of the Socket product
- Help create the technology development plan based on the roadmap by verifying the technology development requirements including the technology benchmarking from the information acquired from the customer interactions.
- Bachelor's degree on Mechanical Engineering or Electrical Engineering. Master's degree is preferred.
- Minimum of 5 years of work experience in a product development of electrical components with mechanical design responsibility, and with d irect customer design and support experience
- Experience in Socket product development is a strong PLUS
- Capable of manipulating CAD modeling tools (Creo, SpaceClaim)
- A solid understanding of mechanical designs including GD&T, structural mechanics and manufacturing process on stamping, injection molding, plating and assembly
- The basic understanding of highspeed signal integrity
- SixSigma methodologies or other strong data analytics background is a PLUS
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English. Communication skills in Japanese and Mandarin are both PLUS
- Ability to work in a global environment, able to collaborate with individuals across geographies
- Complete technical documents, including design specification, test report, engineering presentation
- Proficiency in Excel and Powerpoint
- Knowledge in Computing/Communication systems (high-speed servers, switches, routers, storage) is a PLUS
