SummaryThe Clinical Nurse Educator is accountable for multiple facets of education, training and professional & organizational development within the larger strategy of promoting a learning culture in Primary Care and across the system. The Nurse Educator is responsible for the development and coordination of comprehensive interprofessional education to promote quality education and competency management programs that include problem prone, low volume and high-risk knowledge and skills.ResponsibilitiesThe Clinical Nurse Educator will assess, plan, design, implement, coordinate, and evaluate educational offerings to clinically active VANCHCS Primary Care staff. He/she assists in the development and administration of simulation programs, initiation of computer-based training and other educational technologies for innovative approaches in training and education for clinical Nursing staff at all levels. The Clinical Nurse Educator is expected to exhibit leadership in professional nursing by serving on committees, providing mentorship to professional Nurses, student Nurses and Nurse residents and contribute to their own self development. This position is composed of an education component, unit specific competencies, and a performance component. Requires travel among all VANCHCS sites to meet with Nurse Managers and staff at for teaching, simulation and orientation. Serves as a role model, educator, and researcher and provides leadership to all levels of nurses throughout NCHCS Primary Care Service. Works closely with Nursing Education colleagues to develop, standardize and administer Nursing education programs for VANCHCS Primary Care and is responsible to have a working knowledge of all active programs and the flexibility to travel to any site to deliver education, orientation and training to Nursing personnel on all programs offered. Maintains professional relationships with colleagues among VANAP and School of Nursing faculty and leadership and other personnel throughout the organization. Takes responsibility for leadership and staff assistance in the administration and operationalization of programs that include, but are not limited to: PACT Training, Transition to Practice Program; New Nurse Orientation; the Preceptor Academy (initial course and ongoing development activities); national VA Scholarship programs; the Donna Wright Competency Program and competency verification; administration of Simulation training scenarios and care of equipment; maintenance and currency of Nursing Education SharePoint and Website/calendar, and other programs as assigned. Works closely with the Nurse Managers and staff on the units/clinics providing clinical experience to new nurses, assures managers and preceptors devised assignments that stretch the learner's knowledge and skills for high quality patient care delivery and efficient care coordination. Submits list of staff training requirements and costs for next Fiscal Year that will require use of Nursing Education funds prior to budget request deadline, usually by mid-May - June. Makes rounds and maintains high visibility in all areas assigned, responding to requests of the Nurse Managers and staff, seeking issues that may require immediate training for individuals or groups, providing opportunities to set up Simulation scenarios and provide on-the-spot training when necessary. This is, minimally, a monthly requirement for all clinics/facilities not located at the Nurse Educator's home base. Follows the tracking toward completion of assigned competencies, ACLS, BLS and Nursing license expiration dates for assigned units and works consistently with Nurse Managers to stay on track. Goal is 100% competencies completed by 15 September annually. Performance measure is 90% completion with action plan for make-up within 1 month of end of fiscal year (by 31 October annually). Embodies the highest level of professionalism, integrity and staff/Veteran confidentiality in all interactions, assuring Nurse Manager/staff/Veteran and family confidence/satisfaction during all encounters with the VANCHCS employees. Works in collaboration with each Nurse Manager and his/her staff to review competency folders for currency and completeness on ongoing or, at minimum, quarterly basis. Consistently advises supervisor of any deviations from/issues arising in his/her assigned areas. Maintains Infection Control policy to include requirements of dress and appearance when working with patients on the units or in the clinics. Consults with the Chief Nurse of Primary Care and Nursing Education on all new training programs, assuring that they are pertinent to the target individuals and cost-effective for the organization. Work Schedule: Monday-Friday 08-1630Financial Disclosure Report: Not requiredRequirementsConditions of EmploymentQualificationsPosition Requirements: A current, unrestricted RN licensure from any state or territory of the U.S. Graduate from an accredited school of nursing recognized by the VA (Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) or The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN). Demonstrated abilities in establishment of priorities and time management Excellent interpersonal skills, excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to work effectively in a diverse interdisciplinary environment Knowledge of Patient Education (adult learning) principles Preferred Requirements: BSN and/or Master's degree from an accredited school of nursing recognized by the VA (Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) or The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN). A minimum of five (5) years of acute care clinical nursing practice with demonstrated skills in precepting, skills assessment, communication and mentoring. Current proficiency in Basic Life Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association (Required prior to assuming clinical duties and must remain current -VHA Directive 11-77) Graduate of a doctorate program (PhD or DNP) or related field SIM experience Clinical focus of acute/critical care, emergency nursing, and/or ambulatory care/case mgt Graduate of Clinical Nurse Leader (CNL) master's program.
