Description:
San Diego Powder & Protective Coatings is a fast-paced, family-owned coatings contractor with over 25 years of experience and a workforce of 75+ skilled professionals serving both military and civilian clients. We are seeking a highly motivated Industrial Painter / Sandblaster to support field service contracts across the San Diego region, with the primary work location at Assault Craft Unit 5 (ACU-5), Camp Pendleton.
This dual-skill position involves performing both abrasive blasting and industrial coating applications to support the preservation, repair, and maintenance of naval vessels and marine support equipment.
Work Schedule & Compensation
Schedule: 4x10 work week — Monday through Thursday, 6:00 AM – 4:30 PM
Overtime: Occasional overtime Friday through Sunday as workload requires (40–50+ hours/week)
Pay: $28.00 – $36.00 per hour (DOE)
Benefits: After 90 day probation; Medical, dental, and vision insurance, 401(k), and annual performance bonus.
Responsibilities & Duties
Perform abrasive blasting and surface preparation to SSPC standards (SP-6, SP-10, SP-11, SP-17).
Operate blasting equipment, compressors, and related machinery safely and efficiently.
Conduct proper surface cleaning, masking, mixing, and coating application per manufacturer and NAVSEA specifications.
Apply coating systems (epoxy, polysiloxane, polyurethane, etc.) using spray, brush, or roller to achieve specified DFT.
Inspect surfaces and environmental conditions to ensure proper profile, cleanliness, and coating performance.
Work in confined spaces, aboard vessels, on scaffolding, and in field environments as required.
Coordinate with QA inspectors, project managers, and fellow crew members to meet quality, safety, and production goals.
Collaborate with team members to ensure projects meet quality, safety, and schedule requirements.
Overtime availability is expected as operational demands dictate.
Skills & Qualifications
Minimum 2 years of combined sandblasting and industrial/marine painting experience (shipyard or DoD environment preferred).
Familiarity with SSPC surface prep standards (SP-6, SP-10, SP-11, SP-17) and coating specifications.
Ability to properly mix, apply, and verify coating systems in accordance with TDS, SDS, and NAVSEA requirements.
OSHA-10 certification and/or confined space experience strongly preferred.
Must be able to lift 50 lbs and work in a variety of outdoor conditions.
Experience reading work orders, technical data sheets, and following detailed instructions.
Strong work ethic, safety awareness, and dependable attendance record.
Requirements:
Must be at least 18 years old and authorized to work in the U.S. (E-Verify required)
Must pass a pre-employment drug screening and be subject to random testing
Reliable transportation to Camp Pendleton and other local field sites
Ability to read and write in English and follow written work procedures and drawings
Adherence to all compliance, safety, and PPE requirements daily
Ability to interact professionally with diverse crews, customers, and trades on site
Must be able to stand for prolonged periods, climb stairs, scaffolding, and ladders, work at heights, and in confined space areas.
Must frequently lift/move 10–25 lbs and occasionally up to 50 lbs
Must be able to work in outdoor conditions, including hot, cold, wet, or humid environments
Location: Field-based work throughout San Diego County. Primary site: Assault Craft Unit 5 (ACU-5), Camp Pendleton.
