Job Description

We are a one doctor practice looking for an EXPERIENCED VETERINARY TECHNICIAN with at least 3 years of recent experience as a veterinary technician. We pride ourselves on offering our clients the very best service and expect all our employees to strive for excellence every day. We maintain a modern facility with advanced equipment like digital x-ray, an in-house pharmacy and in-house laboratory. We are located in Shalimar Florida so we see clients from surrounding areas like Fort Walton Beach, Mary Esther, Eglin, Hulbert, and even a few from Destin and Crestview. It is best that candidates live within 45 minutes from us due to traffic a commuting times.

The veterinary technician assists in multiple procedures providing care for animals including physical examinations, dental procedures, surgeries, immunizations, euthanasia as well as client education, marketing and inventory maintenance. This position requires an extensive working knowledge of pharmaceutical drugs, common diseases; their symptoms, means of transmission, treatment and prevention, and other basic preventative health care recommendations. This is an overview of the position and the job responsibilities listed do not encompass the entire position.

PRIMARY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

Obtain and record patient histories.

Assist veterinarian in exam rooms. Proper animal handling and restraint is a must.

Collect specimens and perform routine laboratory procedures and tests.

Dispense and administer medications, vaccines, serums, and treatments as prescribed by veterinarians.

Administer fluids and blood products as prescribed by the veterinarian.

Monitor anesthesia under the direction of a veterinarian.

Provide specialized nursing care for injured or ill animals.

Prepare patients, instruments and equipment for surgery

Assure that monitoring and support equipment are in good working condition.

Assist in diagnostic, procedures including x-rays and the occasional ultrasounds.

Communicate with and educate owners.

Maintain knowledge of preventative healthcare recommendations in order to answer client questions, provide education on vaccines, flea and heartworm products, and assist in marketing veterinary services from which their pet would benefit, such as a dental cleaning, senior wellness, spay and neuter.

Educate clients on products and medications sold including dietary products and answer client questions regarding products.

Maintain inventory of pharmaceuticals, equipment and supplies.

Clean, maintain and sterilize instruments, equipment, and materials.

Clean, organize and restock treatment rooms.

Work well with each other, make certain that your actions support the clinic, and the doctors.

Perform other duties as assigned.

SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE

Ability to think quickly in a critical situation.

Ability to work self-sufficiently on assigned tasks and accept direction on given assignments.

Knowledge of the procedures used for receiving, treating, scheduling patients, and requesting laboratory tests.

Knowledge of proper animal restraint.

Knowledge of the use, care, and storage of veterinary instruments, materials, and equipment.

Knowledge of the instruments, material, and standardized procedures used daily.

Knowledge of animal behavior and temperament.

Knowledge of sterilization techniques to sterilize various instruments and materials.

Knowledge of principles and processes for providing client services.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Accurately perform laboratory tests.

Input data into computer system

Accurately dispense and administer medications and vaccines.

Receive, handle and treat patients with skill, compassion and care including; monitoring during anesthesia, administering fluids, assisting in diagnosing, surgery and general care.

Ability to observe animal appearance and activity for general physical condition, obvious signs of illness, disease, and discontent.

We are a small clinic so regular attendance and timeliness are a must in order to fulfill the requirements of this position.

Strong communication and client service skills are a must. Considerable tact and mediation is required. Ability to work with clients and patients in a professional, friendly, hospitable manner.

Work well with all team members and ensure that your actions support the hospital, the doctors and the practice philosophy.

Perform general physical activities that require bending, standing, stooping, moving from room to room, sit, talk, and listen; may be required to walk or stand for long periods of time; will use hands to manipulate, handle, or feel; will reach with hands and arms.

Frequently lift, carry, and handle dogs and/or cats, some weighing up to 50 pounds.

Be able to handle the 100+ patients that come in our clinic with assistance if needed.

Handle a fractious cat and take control of the situation so that no one is hurt¦client, patient, doctor or technician.

The ideal candidate will be confident and compassionate in managing client issues which may include grief, client education, and financial concerns. The ideal candidate will perform well under stressful conditions, especially during emergencies. The ideal candidate will be self-motivated, a quick thinker, have excellent communication skills, strong organizational skills, problem solving ability and the ability to multitask in a stressful environment.
