For more information, visit Southern Company Gas at southerncompanygas.com.The responsibilities for the Senior Accountant position include preparation of monthly journal entries, reconciliations, and ad hoc requests. The Accountant is primarily responsible for recording and reporting on Operations and Maintenance Expenses for a Local Distribution Utility; Variance analysis; FERC ledger and FERC reporting; and other ad hoc requests. This role must work well with strict deadlines.Job Responsibilities & Accountabilities by CompetencyFunctional Expertise:

Records basic to complex financial transactions via journal entries.

Performs general ledger account reconciliations; analyzes and researches outstanding items/issues.

Monitors reports/accounts/expenses; determines and makes necessary adjustments.

Works with customers (internal and external) to resolve problems; answers questions and provides recommendations.

Generates standard and non-standard reports; analyzes data.

Business Acumen:

Calculates, reviews, and analyzes financial information relating to specialty area (e.g., general ledger, FERC ledger); analyzes variances; uses professional judgment and expertise to perform complex estimates and calculations.

Monitors and analyzes expenditures and balance sheet variances.

Demonstrates ability to multi-task and prioritize.

Independently and creatively solves problems.

Engagement:

Works with customers (internal and external), and colleagues to resolve problems.

Assists internal customers with recommendations on recording transactions; explains the impact to the general ledger and financial statements.

Collaborates and builds effective relationships with stakeholders.

Driving Results:

Implement process and system changes as necessary to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of responsibilities.

Responsible for monitoring progress against goals/deliverables; holds self accountable for results.

Follows organizational policies and procedures.

QualificationsEducation, Certifications/Licenses:Required:

BA/BS degree in Accounting

Related Work Experience:Required:

4-6 years advanced accounting experience performing complex financial analysis and research.

Preferred:

6-8 years advanced accounting experience performing complex financial analysis and research.

Natural gas industry experience.

Accounts Receivable/Bad Debt Analysis experience.

Audit experience.

Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or currently pursuing.

Specific Skills & Knowledge:Required:

Intermediate to Advance knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).

Demonstrated problem-solving abilities, including the ability to critically think and present new or creative solutions.

Common ERP (e.g. PeopleSoft, SAP etc.) and reporting knowledge/abilities.

Skilled in using Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).

Strong organizational skills.

Strong Account reconciliation skills.

Team player and with the ability to work independently.

Ability to work in an organized, detailed manner under tight deadline.
