Entomology Research Assistant

Position Summary:

This position, located in southern Idaho, is available on a continuing basis (contingent upon funding) to assist the Entomology program in the establishment and maintenance of field, laboratory, storage, and/or greenhouse experiments and assist with data collection from experiments. The goal of the Entomology program is to conduct research on the biology, behavior, and ecology of insect pests and their natural enemies in order to develop economically and environmentally sound management strategies, primarily in potato and sugar beet.

Minimum Qualifications:

Due to job requirements, successful candidates must be at least 18 years of age. Possess good written communication skills and ability to communicate with supervisors, co-workers, and third parties. Willingness to: work on research projects aimed at exploring behavior, ecology, and management of agricultural insect pests and their natural enemies. Willingness and ability to: work with and without direct supervision; work flexible and/or overtime schedule when the workload dictates; follow good safety practices. Knowledge in one or more of the following disciplines: biology, entomology, horticulture, agriculture, chemistry, or physical sciences. Knowledge and experience with basic personal computer software programs, including Microsoft Word and Excel.

Preferred Qualifications:

Possess good verbal communication skills. Possess a valid drivers license and ability to drive a UI vehicle (pass driving record check and defensive driving course). Experience in: scientific principles and conducting laboratory experiments. Experience keeping accurate records. Experience working on a farm and in a greenhouse and laboratory. Demonstrated ability to work in a cooperative manner and be an integral team member. Demonstrated ability to operate, maintain, calibrate, troubleshoot, and resolve basic problems with instruments and farm equipment.

Physical Requirements & Working Conditions:

Physical ability to: position body and limbs to perform functions of this position in the field, laboratory, and/or greenhouse and move body and limbs throughout the shift in the field, laboratory, and/or greenhouse.

Work effectively with plant and soil materials that may contain pollen, dust, or other irritants.

Lift, carry, and/or otherwise move field, laboratory, and/or greenhouse items weighing up to 40 pounds.

Ability to work in outdoor weather conditions.

Willingness and ability to: occasionally work with and/or apply toxic, volatile, corrosive chemicals and/or carcinogenic substances following strict safety rules.
