About the Position: This is a Production Machinery Mechanic (Machine Repair) Position. This position will be filled at the WG-9, WG-10, or full performance WG-11 with the Joint Manufacturing and Technology Center out of Rock Island, Illinouis. Responsibilities Repair or modify difficult mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic production or industrial equipment. Manufacture, modify, or rebuild complex hydraulic pumps. Perform preventative maintenance on industrial machinery. Troubleshoot equipment to determine the area of difficulty to complete repairs. Utilize geometry, complex shop mathematics, and handbook formulas for surfaces with interrelated dimensions. Apply construction and assembly techniques to manufacture replacement parts with complex configurations. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. There is no specific length of training or experience required. However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision. Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Production Machinery Mechanic (Machine Repair) without more than normal supervision. Screen-Out WG-09 Level: Ability to do the work of a Production Machinery Mechanic (Machine Repair) without more than normal supervision. Applicants must meet the screen out element to be considered further. The work of the position normally includes performing maintenance on most machinery; and repairing machinery/equipment. Screen-Out WG-10 Level: Ability to do the work of a Production Machinery Mechanic (Machine Repair) without more than normal supervision. Applicants must meet the screen out element to be considered further. The work of the position normally includes performing maintenance on machinery; diagnosing mechanical problems; and repairing machinery/equipment. Screen-Out WG-11 Level: Ability to do the work of a Production Machinery Mechanic (Machine Repair) without more than normal supervision. Applicants must meet the screen out element to be considered further. The work of the position normally includes modifying or rebuilding hydraulic pumps, diagnosing mechanical problems; performing maintenance on machinery; and setting up a variety of machine tools. - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal Supervision Screen Out Ability to Interpret Instructions, Specification, etc. (includes blueprint reading) Ability To Use Hand Tools for Machine Shop KNOWLEDGE OF EQUIPMENT ASSEMBLY, INSTALLATION, REPAIR, ETC. Technical Practices (theoretical, precise, artistic) Trouble Shooting PHYSICAL EFFORT: Frequently handles objects weighing up to 50 pounds, occasionally carrying objects in excess of 50 pounds for considerable distances. Pushes, pulls, reaches, walks, crawls, kneels, bends, and climbs for sustained periods of time. WORKING CONDITIONS: Works inside/outside exposed to prevailing weather conditions and excessive noise. Constantly exposed to moving objects, elevations, and sharp edges with possibility of cuts and bruises and more serious injuries. Grease, dirt, and dampness are frequently encountered in job. Education Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone no substitution of education for experience is permitted. Additional Information Male applicants born after December 31, 1959, must complete a Pre-Employment Certification Statement for Selective Service Registration. You will be required to provide proof of U.S. Citizenship. One year trial/probationary period may be required. Direct Deposit of Pay is required. Payment of Permanent Change of Station (PCS) costs is not authorized, based on a determination that a PCS move is not in the Government interest. This position is a TERM Not to Exceed 13 months position. It is time limited and may be extended up to a maximum of eight years with provisions to be made permanent without further competition. To be eligible for conversion, employee must complete at least 2 years of current continuous service under a term appointment in the competitive service AND employee must have a current performance rating under such term appointment of at least fully successful or equivalent.
