Join the award-winning KU Dining team for an excellent work environment and fantastic benefits. As a Supervisor, you will prepare complex menu items using recipes according to serving line demand. Our supervisors assist in training cooks, cooks helpers and part-time team members. You will maintain departmental cash handling policies in operation of facilities.

Essential duties and responsibilities

1. Cost Consciousness

Work within the approved budget for, Cost of Goods, Cost of Labor and Cost of General Expenses.

Takes initiative to minimize waste and excess inventory; conserves resources.

Develops and implements cost savings measures.

Offers sales initiatives to generate revenue and traffic counts; able to transfer this revenue to profits through effective cost management.

Effectively uses FSS to purchase, forecast, inventory and account for general expenses.

2. Food Quality Management

Upholds a standard of expectations to only serve accurate and approved recipes.

Displays a commitment of excellence in all areas of food production.

Provides feedback and suggestions to the Executive Sous Chef to improve and promote food quality when possible.

Accepts feedback to improve performance and food production quality.

Monitor your own work and those of your employees to ensure quality expectations are met.

3. Managing People

Capable of providing direction to your staff and receiving timely compliance with regards but not limited to KUMU policy, training, and disciplinary actions.

Include employees in planning events and projects.

Takes responsibility for employees activities.

Provide regular performance feedback and are available to employees

Develops employees skills and encourages growth through effective onboarding, use of KUDS Training materials including Cornerstone and Employee Training Checklists, and ensuring Cornerstone assigned training are completed by deadline.

4. Food Safety

ServSafe Manager Certified.

Directs employees to follow safe food handling policies.

Takes and logs temperatures pursuant to KU Dining policy and maintains records.

Promotes a clean and sanitary work environment including tools and equipment.

Follows and directs others to follow good hygiene practices.

5. Customer Service

Displays courtesy and sensitivity to all guest and employee interactions.

Able to effectively manage difficult or emotional customer/client situations.

Meets commitments and keeps appointments with clients, guests and direct supervisor.

Responds promptly to customers needs.

Solicits customer feedback to improve service and food quality.

6. Cooperation

Establishes and maintains effective relations to enable working with other Union departments and employees

Exhibits tact and consideration regarding KUMU and University information

Displays positive outlook and pleasant manner with all employees, guests, students, and University representatives.

Offers assistance and support to co-workers with Union, Dining and projects and goals.

Works collaboratively in group situations towards common goals.

Works actively to resolve conflicts amongst employees

Perform any other related duties as required or assigned. In this role you will directly supervise full and part-time employees.

Required knowledge, abilities and skills

Ability to use and teach proper equipment operation in a state of the art kitchen.

Knowledge of modern health, sanitary and safety standards and practices applied to food service.

Ability to become and retain ServSafe certification within six months of hire. Working knowledge of Kansas sanitation requirements for food production and product storage.1.

Ability to supervise, train and evaluate employees in their job performance aiming for fast and efficient customer service.

Ability to listen, discuss and formulate responses (orally and in writing) to both employee and customer's questions/concerns/problems.

Ability to work a flexible and erratic schedule and to accept the physical requirements, lifting up to 40 lbs., walking, stooping and bending.

Ability to assume operational responsibility for total operations in absence of manager.

Minimum qualifications

High School graduation or GED equivalent

Proven understanding of food preparation and food service operations.

Able to demonstrate common culinary skills and understanding of culinary concepts.

Previous Customer service experience.

Preferred qualifications

Extensive knowledge of culinary supervision and/or management in a food service operation.
