Job Description

The Liquid Handling Automation Specialist reports to the Head of Operational Engineering and is responsible for robotic automation within a fast pace and highly automated biotech environment including oligonucleotide manufacturing, gene synthesis and sequencing applications

Responsibilities Include:

  • Validates, adapts and customizes new robotic equipment to support the automation of the lab processes
  • Develops, validates and implements new applications for current and new robotic lab equipment
  • Continuously analyses and improves current automation in the lab by applying state of the art technology
  • Integrates and connects different robotic platforms into highly automated production lines by using best practice for both the individual platforms and their integration
  • Develops and/or customizes software components for the communication between the robotic platforms and the LIMS system as well as software components for the scheduling of lab processes in the automated production line
  • Works together with the process chemists to design and implement specific methods / protocols for the production environment
  • Works together with the Maintenance department for modifications to robotic platforms, the production lines or the lab environment
  • Documents all steps of the design and implementation process and collects and analyzes experimental data for the validation process (IQ, OQ, PQ)
  • Coordinates with production and maintenance for the evaluation and implementation of new equipment and processes
  • Works with vendors of liquid handling systems and manages service level of vendors
  • Research best liquid handling equipment for applications and keep up to date information about all systems
  • Communicates effectively with all levels of production and management
  • Provide day-to-day operational support of Compound Logistics to support Lead Evaluation and Compound screening activities including registration, weighing, storing, inventory maintenance and internal and external shipping of research compounds
  • Interface between biologists, engineers and data management team and be ensure maximum uptime of Compound Logistics automated laboratory equipment
  • Process sample requests for distribution and maintain proper documentation
  • Daily instrument prep for liquid handlers and automation including, troubleshooting and recovery of basic instrumentation errors
  • Hands-on hardware/programming experience with robotic liquid handlers (e.g. Tecan, Hamilton, Beckman, Agilent) and robotic integration / scheduling software (e.g. HighRes Biosolutions Cellario or Thermo Scientific Momentum) is preferred
  • Technical knowledge and experience with laboratory automation and compound processing and tracking, including knowledge and use of Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS) is preferred
  • Label and track compounds for storage and shipment label compounds
  • Liquid handling QC operation and data analysis

  • Ensures that all processes are ISO 9001-2008 and ISO 13485 conform

Qualifications

Requirements:

  • BS degree in Engineering with 3-5 years experience, preferably in an ISO-9001:2000 or cGMP biotechnology manufacturing environment.
  • Previous experience with liquid handling equipment is preferred.
  • Ability to work independent and project oriented
  • Ability to evaluate experimental results independently
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment
  • Ability to set priorities, manage multiple priority tasks and make technical decisions within time constraints.
  • Ability to clearly communicate verbally and in writing
  • Familiar with standard laboratory procedures
  • Computer literacy, including familiarity with Microsoft Excel and Windows Explorer
  • Ability to work with Hazardous Chemicals and to lift 35+ pounds
  • Annual RCRA awareness training.

Preferences:

  • MS degree in Engineering
  • Previous training experience
  • Previous SOP documentation.
