High School Diploma or possession of a General Equivalency Diploma (GED)

ExperienceTwelve (12) months following the achievement of a particular grade level (i.e., Grades D, C, B, A and AA), an incumbent may be advanced to the next grade level provided he/she has taken and passed any required written or practical tests, acquired any required certifications and has met acceptable fitness for duty, work record and job performance requirements.

Level D

A minimum of (4) four years of hands-on experience performing troubleshooting, repair and inspection tasks on combustion engine powered equipment having mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and HVAC systems

Level C

A minimum of (5) five years of hands-on experience performing troubleshooting, repair and inspection tasks on combustion engine powered equipment having mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and HVAC systems

Level B

A minimum of (6) six years of hands-on experience performing troubleshooting, repair and inspection tasks on combustion engine powered equipment having mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and HVAC systems

Level A

A minimum of (7) seven years of hands-on experience performing troubleshooting, repair and inspection tasks on combustion engine powered equipment having mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and HVAC systems

Level AA

A minimum of (8) eight years of hands-on experience performing troubleshooting, repair and inspection tasks on combustion engine powered equipment having mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and HVAC systems

Job SummaryThe Mechanic Car Track Equipment Maintenance (CTEM) performs maintenance and repairs on Track Equipment used to maintain Metro’s Rail infrastructure. Incumbent performs inspections, repairs, troubleshooting, installation, and calibration of internal combustion engine type powertrains; telescoping cranes, hydraulic pneumatic, electrical systems; and heating and air conditioning systems. Performs light metalworking, welding, and fabrication, and other tasks on related equipment associated with and installed on heavy rapid transit track maintenance equipment.Job Levels: At each successive grade level of this job, (i.e., Grades: D, C, B, A and AA), the incumbent is expected to demonstrate increased, distinguishing levels of proficiency and efficiency in knowledge, skills and abilities when performing the assigned duties and essential functions described in this job description.“AA Lead” Level: In addition to independently performing the most complex aspects of the duties and essential functions described, the incumbent is responsible for ensuring work responsibilities of a group or team are properly completed in a timely manner and acts in the absence of the supervisor as required.Essential Functions

Performs major and minor repairs, inspections, necessary adjustments, testing, troubleshooting, cleaning, lubrication, and scheduled maintenance on all assigned heavy equipment used to maintain the rail system. Performs all actions in accordance with engineering technical documentation, diagrams, schematics, operation manuals, manufacturer’s maintenance instructions, and equipment-specific WMATA instructions. Activities are performed in shops, yards and in RAIL work locations to include tunnels, aerial structures and ballasted tracks

Moves Rail Equipment on yard tracks for maintenance purposes. Follows Metro’s Safety Rules and Procedures Handbook and Yard Operator instructions to safely move Rail Equipment on tracks, thru switches, and into and out of shops.

Performs preventive, scheduled, unscheduled or corrective maintenance and troubleshoots and tests all equipment systems, subsystems and components using precision measuring equipment, electrical test equipment, and other instruments as required. Operates shop equipment and various special tools.

Maintains heavy track equipment mechanical, hydraulic and pneumatic systems and components, to include trucks, wheels, axles, gear boxes, and friction brake systems. Also maintains interior/exterior weldments and associated equipment.

Implements Engineering Modification instructions (EMI’s) and Maintenance Service Instructions (MSIs) to heavy track maintenance equipment structural, mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems and performs new equipment and component acceptance testing.

Completes required documentation and reports associated with the repair and maintenance of heavy track maintenance equipment and related components.

Responds to and assists in emergencies which require movement of trains and heavy equipment involved in incidents, accidents, or derailments using re-rail equipment.
