I use a power wheelchair full-time. I have limited mobility, but I am cognitively agile, conversational, and easygoing.
The things that matter most to me in a PCA are RELIABILITY, health, and personal compatibility. I'm most comfortable around bright, open-minded people with can-do vibes. Prior caregiving experience is great, but I'm totally fine training a newbie who fits into the household culture (and doesn't have to check their phone twice a minute).
Duties include:
Transferring with pivot lift
Exercising and range of motion PT
Hygiene/grooming/dressing
Food prep and feeding
Laundry & basic housekeeping
Tending to my cat
420-friendly
As you can see, there isn't much "medical" stuff to deal with (no injections, no tubes, no wounds, no pain even). I just need A LOT of help with things, because my hands and arms are essentially offline.
