The senior fleet maintenance technician is responsible for maintenance, service and repair of the entire VTA fleet of vehicles and equipment. Much of the work in this position will be on medium/heavy duty diesel and gasoline vehicles as well as electric buses. VTA will provide the opportunity for training on electric buses. The senior technician must be able to collaborate with the service coordinator to plan and schedule work as well as train the entry level technicians.

Primary Responsibilities:
Conducts vehicle safety inspections and replaces defective parts and components;
Inspects, diagnoses, repairs, overhauls and installs electrical systems, fuel systems, hydraulic systems, ignition, emission, and pneumatic, mechanical and related vehicle computerized systems;
Troubleshoots, repairs, rebuilds and performs preventive maintenance on major bus components including engines, transmissions, differentials, air conditioning systems, compressors, wheelchair lifts/ramps, and various electrical parts;
Relines brakes, cuts brake drums and arcs brake lining to fit drums per original equipment manufacture (OEM) standards;
Performs cutting and welding, fabricates and installs a variety of parts and equipment as needed;
Perform routine maintenance tasks such as replacing hoses, oil changes, tire rotations, and fluid checks;
Performs bus exchanges and road calls. Performs repairs on vehicles in the field, as required;
Completes vehicle service requests, lists work performed on work order forms, and indicates additional repairs, if needed;
Follow safety protocols and guidelines to ensure a safe working environment;
Communicate effectively with coworkers;
Safely uses all power and hand-held mechanic’s tools;
Evaluates completed work and conducts inspection of equipment prior to re-lease back into service;
Cleans exterior of all Authority-maintained vehicles and fuels as needed, prior to release back into service;
Fuels and adds lubricants and other fluids to all Authority-maintained vehicles as needed, prior to release back into service;
Ensures that complete chassis, engines and components are pressure-washed and shop work areas are cleaned in accordance with mechanic shop standards;
Available for weekends and on-call hours
Position Requirements:
Minimum of 2 years of maintenance experience (service/repair of motor vehicles).
A minimum of 4 ASE Certifications; preferably including Transit Bus Certification (H Series), Advanced Engine Performance Specialist (L1), Electronic Diesel Engine Diagnosis (L2), Medium-Heavy Duty Truck Certification (T Series),
Valid driver’s license or ability to obtain, and a clear driving record.
This position is subject to pre- and post-employment drug testing.
High school diploma; preferably Associates Degree in diesel or heavy duty equipment
Must have the ability to read, interpret and analyze maintenance manuals, wiring diagrams, trade manuals, governmental regulations, and other documents.
Knowledge of, and skill in applying, the basic principles of operation, basic components, malfunctions, repair practices and preventive maintenance techniques for internal combustion engines, including diesel and motor vehicle systems and sub-assemblies and hybrid vehicles.
Thorough knowledge of the procedures, methods, tools, materials, supplies, and adjusting automotive equipment, computerized diagnostic equipment including hand held and windows-based software.
Thorough knowledge of basic procedures and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of diesel and/or gasoline engines. Basic principles of automotive mechanical, electrical, hydraulic and pneumatic systems.
The individual must be detail oriented and possess a self-motivated desire to learn
Strong problem solving skills and attention to detail.
Ability to take direction from experienced technicians and provide support to less experienced technicians
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple tasks;
