ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Graduate of an accredited school of nursing. Currently licensed as a Registered Nurse in the State of Michigan. Effective January 1, 2013, a BSN or MSN will be required to be in the role.

Minimum of 5 years experience in an acute care setting.

Demonstrates administrative and supervisory ability.

Demonstrates ability to lead/direct others and to work effectively with persons of varied background and educational experience.

Demonstrates effective written and oral communication skills consistent with Relationship Based Care (RBC), Commitment to Co-worker, Munson Medical Center's Mission and Values.

Comprehensive knowledge of general nursing theory and practice including the nursing process.

Additional education in management principles and teaching is preferred.

For those hired into roles after October 1st, 2013, BSN required and MSN preferred.

ORGANIZATION

Under direct and general supervision of the Admission Manager, may also receive direction from the Vice President Patient Care Services, and any/all Directors and Managers of Patient Care Services.

Works collaboratively with all nursing and non-nursing managers throughout the organization.

Functions within approved nursing, medical, and hospital standards and policies.

Provides general direction, supervision, and consultation for the work and activities of the Staff on assigned shift of operation.

SPECIFIC DUTIES

Supports the mission statement of Munson Healthcare and Munson Nursing: Munson Healthcare and its partners work together to provide superior quality care and promote community health.

STANDARDS OF PRACTICE

Assessment

Records and evaluates staffing patterns for all inpatient nursing units each shift.

Observes the general shift operations for the presence of or potential for problem situations in the physical and emotional environment.

Diagnosis/Problem Identification

Facilitates interdisciplinary collaboration in data analysis and decision making processes.

Identification of Outcomes

Directs, maintains, and evaluates processes that promote Relationship Based Care and desired patient-centered outcomes that are culturally sensitive and inclusive of patient/family needs according to accepted standards of clinical nursing practice.

Assists in the utilization of the PCSS database to ensure appropriate staffing ratios.

Promotes the integration of clinical, human resource, and financial data to support decision-making.

Planning

Supports organizational and Unit Action Council plans related to the delivery of unit based nursing services and patient care.

Develops and implements goals and objectives annually in concert with the Administrative goals. Reviews and reports on progress quarterly and revises as necessary.

Evaluates need for immediate intervention in family crisis situations and Medical Social Work involvement when available.

Implementation

Facilitates staff participation in decision-making as it relates to the specification of resources necessary for implementation of patient care.

Assures the proper disposition of the deceased; notifies the Medical Examiner per protocol.

Assists in scheduling surgical cases and outpatient medical procedure cases.

Assists Admitting Representatives with the placement and/or transfer of patients.

Assists Environmental Services in arranging the cleaning of late discharged patient's rooms.

Facilitates the process for Work Injuries, For Cause Drug testing and Exposures.

Evaluation

Evaluates the general shift operations for the presence of or potential for problem situation in the physical and emotional environment.

Provides leadership in establishing a culture of safety. Recognizes and reports any occurrences which might result in liability of the hospital.

Demonstrates initiative and judgment in adapting or devising solutions to meet emergency or unusual conditions.

Identifies, investigates, and intervenes as appropriate when problem situations or complaints arise.

Consults the On-call Administrator as necessary and communicates pertinent information to the Admission Manager and/or the appropriate manager and/or Director.

Provides leadership and direction with the interpretation, application, and enforcement of operating policies and procedures and professional standards.

Acts as a professional role model and consultant in health care issues.

Promotes staff development of clinical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
